I finally found a Schooling fish!

I have been looking around for a LONG time for a 'small' sized schooling fish to put in my tank. I think I am getting pretty close. I went to my LFS last week and I found the perfect match. They are called Blue Lined Snappers. My LFS has three of them, so I might give them a try. They said that they will grow to about 7-8 inches which is the only downside. But, the reason why I am posting this is for all of the people in search of a schooling saltwater fish, like me. I saw them school in the fish st
ore and they are beautiful!

You should just get a group of anthias IMO.

Three 8" fish could be a problem some day, unless you have a large tank.
Doubt that will matter...

Fishbase says they get up to 15.75" in the wild.
Well the wild is a whole different story than in captive. I'm just doing the research now, I'm not one to go in and just buy anything with out doing that first...

Well to be a little less pricey a better schooling fish would be the chromis. They would make a great group of fish plus they dont grow very large.
+1 blue or green chromis would be fine. and dont baingia cards school?

Bangs tend to "hang out" together, but they don't generally cruise the tank giving you that "schooling" effect. They are more of a hoovering fish, but yes, they like to stay near each other.

I don't think there is any fish that truly "schools" like they do on the reef.Tanks are just too small and fish quickly learn that they are safe from predators. I have a bunch of Anthias in my reef tank (240) and they have formed a couple of loose harems; they stay fairly close, much of the time, but calling that behavior "schooling" would be stretching it. Any school of fish on the reef almost always occupies more space than any home tank; so even if they "schooled" in the tank, they could still be swimming all over the tank.

Yeah I have heard this before. But when I was at my LFS the blue lined snapper looked like a true school. They were probably about 3 inches long each and in a 20-25 gallon tank in the store. (they were by themselves in the tank) I am not getting this school because of lack of room, but if I did, I would buy them in a heart beat.

they introduced these to hawaii way back when as a good sport fishing species. it never took off as a desirable fishing fish and now they are everywhere. i think you should hook up with a local contact to send you some and cram as many as you can into a tank, with or without water.

Green chromis. Cheap and they dont get big. Dont get the blue ones as they are a bit aggressive and then a pain to get out of you tank if you ever want to remove them. Thats what I am going to get for my 125g
