Im retarted, can someone give me the water turnover formula again. I thought it was you gallons multiplied by 20% turnover and you would get the number of gallons you need turned over per hour
for example 150gallon tank x's 20% = 3000 gph
is this correct?:thinking:

If you have a 150 gallon tank and you want 20 turns per hour, multiply the two for the total flow needed.
150x20= 3000 gallons per hour.
The 20 you used is turns, not percent, but you got the right idea.

I have 46 gal tank. If I use this formula 46x20=920. I currently have 2 maxijet 900s that move 230 gal each. plus the return of the filter which is prob around 50 max. I have tried the maxi 1200 with a flow of 295 but it seems like a $%^& tornado in there. It just seems like to much. Am I missing something. How do you move that much volumn without blowing everything out of the tank. My other alternative is as an Evinrude 75 horsepower outboard engine. LOL.

I have found that if your jets seem to strong the best way is to make thier water streams cross or intersect. this creates a very natural like wave flow very random and it dilutes the strength of each one.

Doesnt that negate the efect of the turnover rate?
No.
I think smaller tanks will have a harder time if you follow that rule anyway.
After you figure the tank minus the lenght of the PH, you would be to close to the tank wall on the other side. Know what I mean? It would be very hard to use more than 2 PH's without the water spilling over the side of the tank. A sump would be best to get the max flow from it.
My 90 SPS tank is under flowed. I have 210 thru the sump.
400 thru a CL
250 across the back of the rocks.
And (2) 1200MJ acting as a wave opposite each other. So only 1 is on at a time.
Thats only 1150 GPH in a SPS tank. It's fine for me and the corals.

Thanks Dbur. I think with the large volumn of lr in my smaller tank that my turnover should be just fine. I still am between 10 and 20 %.
