I used to be scared of this thing when it stayed in its hole. Now it is wandering about in my tank. I am going to lose some sleep tonight.

Sure looks like a red-eyed reef crab...but I might just be keying on the red eyes. Sinister little bugger, no? I think I remember reading somewhere that they're fairly aggressive and can even inflict a fairly unpleasant pinch/laceration on your fingers if you aren't careful. But then again I might be smoking crack. 100% agree that he's scary, though.

I haven't gotten a really good look at his pinchers. He was out a minute ago and I was trying to catch him but he outsmarted me. He has been in there at least 6 months.

I had the exact same crab in my tank. In fact, he may still be in there. I never could get a picture of him and he only came out of a hole at night. As soon as a light came on or there was movement, he went back in.
I never could get an ID on him because I couldn't get the picture, but that is definitely him.
Haven't seen him in his hole or elsewhere in a long time. That's fine with me! He had to eat something and I never figured out what it was....crabs, snails, fish???

My guy is the same way. I only see him at night when I use a flashlight. There has been several weeks at a time that goes by before I see him again. I also don't know what he eats. He probably gets by on the food I feed. The only other thing he could eat is hermit crabs because that is the only thing I don't keep track of.

I have "had" 2 of them in my tank for above 6 months. About 3 days ago I came out and turned on the kitchen light to get a drink and saw them fighting. The next morning one was one the bottom dead. Mine always edged out of their holes during the day and I watched them pick at algae on the lr. They are freaky little critters. Mine had white bands on their legs and were about 2" long? Is that the same with everyone else's?

I don't see any white bands on mine but I did find a dead crab a couple days after the rock was put in though. Do crabs molt?

I would imagine they do. I think the only way an invertebrate can grow is to shed its exoskeleton at each growth spurt. If if did molt, it should be clear or opaque and not look like a whole crab at all.
