Aww, he's very cute. I've had many rats over the years (as pets and feeders) and currently have 1 hairless rat and a little colony of African Soft Fur Rats (which are not rats or mice at all!) I recommend rats as pets, especially for kids over hamsters any day.
Just curious, why are rats better pets than hamsters? I've had hamsters when I was a kid but never rats.

I remember having a hamster a long time ago. My take is, guinea pigs are the kings of the rodent family. Kids should have those imo. Of course they require bigger cages. I think parents usually like to go with hamsters because most cringe at the idea of having a big rat in their house. However those little dwarf hamsters are mean as hell

Guinea pig is a delicacy in Peru. It's called Cuy. Sorry, I didn't mean to get my glasses in the shot

Ginea pigs can be very skittish. I had a couple when I would younger and they were not that great.
Hamsters tend to bite and sleep all day.
Rats are up there with ferrets but they dont smell as bad as ferrets. They are very intellegent and know their humans like dogs or cats.
If mine are sleeping they wake up and come to the cage door unlike the hamster I used to have.

Why must they keep the legs and head on? Here in the US I think the only thing we do that with is pig and duck

The head is the best part. That isn't a joke, a lot of people find that to be the tastiest part. The cheeks are the best part of most animals...

Rats need friends, they are too social to be alone, go get him another male rat to keep him company. I have mice but they are feeders for my ferrets and snake.

When I was a kid I didn't know this... rats are incontinent. They pee constantly. You can't see it until you shine florescent light on it. I know it is true of wild rats, but I am not positive about the pet ones.
You might want to look into it before you let him crawl around on you before work. Had my mother known about this I would have not been allowed a rat as a pet.
I don't know about incontinent rather....they like to scent mark everything, their sense of smellis a lot better than their vision. but I've always found the females to be way worse for this, leaving little droplets everywhere. My males will sometimes pee but it's bigger and only in one spot and usually not on me.

I find more hamsters to be disagreeable to being handled during the day,or in fact at all really.... Hamsters are a lot quicker to bite than rats, I've actually only ever been bitten by one pet rat (who was very ill) but ALL of the hamsters I had as a kid bit at some point even when they were used to me. Also if a rat gets out of his cage he's a lot more likely to go back to it after he's done exploring. Plus I think they actually like to interact with is, when I come into the room mine will come to the top begging to be let out.
What have you named the white one? :)
