I ORDERED ROCK FROM THIS SITE AND MINE CAME VERY DIRTY ALSO.
IT EVEN HAD PACKING PAPER STUCK TO IT. I ALMOST DIDNT RINSE IT BUT I AM SO GLAD I DID. I SUCTIONED SALT WATER OUT OF MY TANK
(DOING A SMALL WATER CHANGE) AND PUT THE ROCK IN A BUCKET OF IT. THEN I RINSED IT DOWN WITH THIS WATER ONE PIECE AT A TIME.
WOW - SO MUCH CRUD CAME OFF - I WAS SO HAPPY I DIDN'T PUT IT DIRECTLY IN MY TANK. I DIDN'T TAKE A SPONGE AND SCRUB IT. I WAS AFRAID I'D KILL ANY HITCHHIKERS . IT HAS BEEN IN MY TANK NOW APPROX. 2 MONTHS AND IT IS STARTING TO GET PURPLE AND GREEN AND PRETTY. BUT IT TOOK TWO MONTHS FOR ANYTHING REALLY TO HAPPEN WITH MINE. I PURCHASED 30 POUNDS ALSO.
GOOD LUCK.

just rinse it off with regular water and smell the whole rock for any foul smell. If you smell something foul, then something is dead in that area of the rock. Rinse that area until you dont smell something foul. Then put it in a bucket to cure it, or if you have no livestock in your tank, just stick it in there until your tank cycles.
I wouldnt recommend washing it with a sponge at all, especially if it is a used sponge. Just rub loose stuff of with your hands and you should be fine
