I hate Algebra!!

I share your pain. I hated algebra. I hated algebra II. I disliked but understood geometry/trig. I really hated calculus. And differential equations was a nightmare for me.
The trick to math is to stay up to date with the class & homework and practice, practice, practice. Good luck.

It is all the same if he knows how to do them with a 4 and a 5 he'll know how to do them with a 2 and a 7. You aren't going to learn if you don't know how it is supose to look.
That makes sense. lol. I thought you were trying to cheat on his homework
but looking at the examples in math usually helps me the most so

It seems like most people are either good in algebra or geo/trig...but not both.

MATH IS THE MOST WORTHLESS SUBJECT THEY REQUIRE. U NEVER USE THE SH!T THE TEACH U. BESIDES IN SCHOOL. I HATE MATH
Sorry about that. But its so dang pointless

most of the time. It becomes obvious at around 4th grade when the "real life" situation type problems would never happen in real life.

That is basic math in my book.
oh?
what happens when someone's hourly pay is more than someone elses? or if you want to figure out someone's weekly pay? the "basic" math is actually an algebra equasion:
40x + 1.5((y-40)x) = z
where
x= hourly rate
y = hours worked
z = weekly pay
how's that basic math?
i bet if you think really hard about it, most everything you think is basic math is actually algebra or harder. imo, the only basic math is x+y, x-y, x * y, and x/y where you already have known values for x and y

Sounds like you guys have different books.

Some of the problems are easy, but I don't understand most of it!!

Well, that's my rant for today.
Dude, 1 rule: read and memorize rules.

kinda how i thought in geometry. its amazing how framing a roof, designing stairs, and trimming use so much geometry. i have learned more building a hip roof than i ever learned in school, and i went through calc 2 in college.
now if i could find somethin in construction that could teach me to spell i would be set.

Ugh, hip roof...I had to figure one for a job. It was a million dollar err so house (that means a large house in OHIO,vs the million dollar studio in California) Anyways...It took me three days to figure out the materials. Had never done one and was self teaching. I go out to the contractor and he wanted to do it differently (using 2x12's instead of LVL err spacing err something like that). He breaks out the "construction master 5" and figures it in about 5 minutes...I was furious.

I use complex math literally everyday.
Forecasting unkowns and calculating odds based on variables.
Math IS power as it is said. Often ridiculed, but it IS one of my strongest abilities and I rely heavily on it every day of my life.
A strong understanding of upper level math is critical if you want to be strong with logistics for any larger operation. You can stand from a crowd when it is KNOWN that you know your stuff.
Goes beyond just being good with numbers. It is about being ABLE to think something through within seconds of an idea surfacing to verify its viability for parties involved. Being respected and rediculously overpaid because it.
Please do not discount it as trivial or chock it into a pile of pure academic hooey.
Just my opinion, sorry if I am so bold on this subject but please never let me hear your young mind stray down the path that it is useless beyond scholastic means..It is VERY important to know as an adult. Who knows what you may want to do with your life. Why not cover all the bases.
Your a very sharp and able chap. Don't take the lazy way out. Try hard and focus even a fraction towards your studies that you put into your hobbies and you will make an amazingly successful adult.
Sorry if I got on a rant.

Ok. Thanks for all the help/info/inspiration everyone!!
its really amazing how much easier math is to learn when you are applying it to something. the scary thing about it is that you are more likely to use it everyday doing physical labor, and actually have to know how it works than using a college education. many post college applications are very complicated so u learn how to make a computer calculate it while doing the more simple form you are more likely to not have a computer to figure it.
having something like the construction calculator mentioned above may very well give you the right answer, but if you cant doit by hand you dont know if its right till u apply it, and if its wrong you have to know how to fix it yourself.
always try to figure it out yourself before you look to the back of the book for the odd answers.
i know they are there have had to use them myself.

the calculator is great for true hips and valleys and make them go quick. but they dont work as well with the stupid octogons i am putting on the front of houses here on LBI, or calafornia valleys that form half way down a hip and land as a no tail next to another hip on a corner. dam things take forever to figure and then another hour to double check before you short (u never cut them long)a board that costs a few hundred bucks

+100000000 algebra sucks
geometry was better, trig is ok if you have a good teacher

Math=logic, even if you don't use it directly, it is a great ability to have.
I completely and utterly agree.
When I am figuring out how to do something and telling six employees what to do at a time, logic comes into play. How much time does each person take doing what and who is better at it and who can do it etc. etc.
I agree, math is a pain in the ass to comprehend at first, but when you sit down and think it through, you then think "my gosh, why wasn't I able to do this at first! That's neat!"
Anyways.
