I hate stupid ignorant ASSININE people (Electric company)

Well on the 21st my lights went off I called the electric company that told me due to failure to pay my bill they turned my lights off. and that they would require the amount of the bill PLUS 300$ to turn the damn thing back on... BUT the bill was paid the day I got the bill at the begining of the month. needless to say their were many many words said between me and the person and their supervisor because I had the bill in front of me along with the authorization number where they took my CC as payment and my my bank statement. took all that up there to them and they still said that they didnt have a record of payment and would have to look into it. I told them since I had all the paper work showing that I paid the bill in more than enough time for it not to get shut off to turn it back on. WELL they sid that it was impossible because the COMPUTER said that it needed 550$ total to turn them back on.
well in the mean time my take is just looking awful I took as much as I could into the LFS and did what I could for the rest. but when the lights came on this afternoon I had a colony of zoos and a colony of star polyps are all that I could save.!!! so I am very pissed off. I called them (in the mean time I was adding up what THEIR ignornace had cost mewhich was well over 3000$) and ask them who was going to reimburse me for all my livestock that was KILLED by them. they told me that it was just one of those things that happens sometimes and no money will be reimburesed to me for anything that I lost in the ordeal.
I now have several empty dead tanks beacause of this crap.
I will be calling a lawyer tomorrow and see what suit if any I can fil against them. my worry is that its a co-op that that is going to be a big troublesome ordeal even after all crap already.
sorry so long I had to VENT though
anyone with any suggestions PLEASE by all means tell me I am at my witts end with this.

I'll just go on record as saying I cannot stand frivolous lawsuits, but I definately think you should sue. That's ridiculous.

Interesting they would turn your lights out so quick. Don't you at least have an extra month to pay the previous bill with late penalty and such? It makes no sense and sounds like a computer glitch they had. Go to the top of their food chain and try and get results. The grunts can't do crap in company like that.

You pay with your cc thats a mistake to start with take some of that reef money and pay electric bill in advance cash to avoid these problems:rolleyes:

thats what I did but since its a co-op the board meetts once a month thats the top very tip top the highest was office personel and thats what they told me and done. the bill was actually due the first of the month sometimes you get the bill a few days before its actually due or the shut offs and others you get way in advanse.
the CC is actually a debit card that I have paid the bill with for almost 2 years now so I dont see where that would be a problem. and it was NEVER declined by the bank or them.

OK... First things first.. I'm not a violent person. Hairtrigger can verify how much patience I have for bull%#@t like this. Reading this thread, I have started to sweat and am on the verge of getting a headache. This is why I pay EVERY bill ON TIME! But I guess we are still defenseless against idiots like that. I'm gritting my teeth and POUNDING my keyboard writing this. As you can probably tell, this kinda crap sends me off the deep end. Iv'e had a few experiences like that w/ the electric company and the gas too, but I never lost any $3000 worth of anything. Props to you TX for not walking down there w/ an AR-15 and making your point well known. God knows I want to do that just out of principle, for your tanks' sake that is. I'm a little too heated to be writing now, so I will stop before I get myself in trouble. TX- TEAR THEM TO F****** PIECES!!!!      Make them look like this guy

thats exactly what I wanted to do fishkiller exactly the only thing keeping me sain now is the net!!!!
kip I thought about that and thats why I havent said any Company names or anything like that there are several co-ops in this area so I dont think its anything to worry about. I am actually biting my tongue on alot of the information and such other than basic info this is what is FACT on what happened.
but thanks for the heads up.

I'm really sorry for your loss there, man. It's my worst nightmare come true! I've had a lot of financial burden loaded up on me (after I set up my tank, of course) this year, and I've been having troubles with my bills as well... I had the same crud pulled on me... but with the phone company. Needless to say, my fish are very upset that they can't make long distance phone calls until this friday. :D Just kidding. Anyhow, I will be more mindful of my bills from now on, because I really don't want that same thing happening to me. Oh, and for all of us here - SUE THE PANTS OFF THOSE GUYS!!!
Good luck man... down with the Man! Down with him!

I'm not sure what state your in, but in many electric companies are often entitled to immunity...this immunity extends to situations like huge blackouts and weather and etc. your claim would raise some interesting issues...maybe a breach of contract claim and negligence. dont get too fired up however. good luck

You might want to consider going to the monthly co-op meeting and bringing it up before the board members before paying for a lawyer. They MIGHT do the right thing.
Keep a record of all your contacts with them. It will come in handy if you do have to get legal with them.

MTX,
One thing that I learned a long time ago, is that no matter how good of a company you are dealing with. It ultimately comes down to a person making $5 an hour. For instance at the company I used to work for we made tubing for semiconductor companies. The companies were very concened about the cleaniless of the tube. It was double bagged in a clean room and we had to guarantee that the tube had no dust or any particles in it. One day I was walking along and some of the shipping guys were cutting a piece of wood over a crate that was to be shipped to the customers. Of course the sawdust was going into the crate. How do you think the customer would feel if they opened up a crate of clean tube and there was sawdust in the crate?
Don't yell at the clerk, they are just doing their job with limited power. However the supervisor should have the power to override things on the computer. When that did not work I think you should have asked for a manager and maybe they would have the power to override the computer.
I am fully behind you. I think you need to talk to the highest person that you can get a hold of and explain the situation. If that does not work talk to the Co-op board. I totally feel that you are in the right in this situation and they are liable for all of the losses that they caused.
Good luck.

Since your losses were less than 5g, I believe you can appear in small claims court. Which would truly put the advantage in your favor. If it went that far. Its likely though that the power company would be immune in regards to reimbursing you for their tank. HOWEVER since you have proof you made payment on time. That might change things, as it wasn't related to acts of god, storms, unexpected plant shut downs, etc.
In most states, you have to be given at minimum a 30 day notice. Also, if you per se.... had a old/sick/young person living with you.... who could be endanger by not having electricity... they can be forced to IMMEDIATELY restore power and not cancel it even if you don't pay the bill, especally now that winter is coming.
Since you're dealing with a co-op, they may have alot of protection from the law in your state. The clerks in the payment office may have no possible way of restoring your power without the approval of the board, since it is a co-op.
Best of luck
