Ok so recently they have decided to do away with re-inlisting with a choice of duty station versus the money. They said because of the economy they are not moving soldiers around alot and they have lowered the sign on bonus. (maybe thats a president thing)
So here I am in Oregon thinking im going to be moving to washington and now I might get stuck back at Fort Polk Louisian the biggest or should I say smallest s**t hole in the united states.
Ya'll know what that means..............I HAVE TO GET RID OF ALL MY LIVE STOCK!!!!!!!!

My son is stuck in Georgia, aka the fifth ring of hell

They tried for a transfer and heard the same thing, there are trying to keep the units intact.

That freakin sucks! I'm all new to this Army stuff. Husband is at Ft. Dix, NJ for 50-75 days before being deployed over to Iraq. I would hate to be moved around a lot.

Oh trust me you want to be moved around when your stationed at Polk

That means that when I move back I will have to be very picky and selective of what I put in my tank in case we have to turn around and move again.
Do ya'll think there is any way possible for coral to survive 3 or possibly 4 days on the road? Has anyone tried it?

Well I am taking my rock and sand because I know I can just recycle the tank again with it.
I was thinking about putting the rock submerged in a large tubaware container with a heating planket wrapped around it (the ones that you can plug into a cig lighter) but I dont know how that would work. Or getting like 50 heating packs and putting new ones in every day. The trip should only take 3-4 days
is it worth it?

you shouldnt need any form of heating device... the heat from the sun and being couped up in the car should keep it at a good temp... wrap your rock in newspaper and keep damp... put your sand in a tupperware container with a few inches of water... use that water to dampen your rock each day...

Its going to be in the fall

I was also worried about the coral attached to the rock. Can the coral survive in bags for that long

just drive south first... NV, AZ, NM, and TX all stay pretty warm in the fall...

as far as the corals go... i doubt they will make it...

Really? Even if they are in heated and insulated bags?

No problem! Just find someone who will hold your coral for you. You will need to do this anyway as you will surely go through a cycle after the trip. Additionally, your "trip" time will be even more extended because you will have to break down and re set up everything. With the stress of the move that could be a blessing not to have to be so pressed to get it back up. If you can find someone you trust to hold the coral, then ship them to you when you are ready for them, maybe taking a frag of whatever is possible for their troubles, you'll be much better off. Even if you need to ship them to them, then they ship them to you later. Or if you know of anyone where you are going to, just ship them ahead and go get them when your ready. If you don't have too aweful much, I have some room on my frags shelves in my 135. As well as possibly some room to hold some more. I don't really need any more coral myself as I am pretty much full waiting for frags to grow out. But I can hold some for someone for a while. I'd be glad and honored to help out a soldier!

My folks live here in town so that would not be a problem but if I put the coral say in a 10 gallon then wouldnt I need to buy a special light for them while I am moving and setting my tank up?

What kind of corals do you have? You could likely get away with something real simple for a month or so. You may be better off with an actual aquarist, but you do have time to get them trained.

xenia, zoanthids, toadstool leather, torch coral, 1 flowerpot coral, 1 birds nest, mushrooms, duncan, star polyps
Could I use a light bulb intended to grow freshwater plants? I know a petstore sells plant growing bulbs that will fit in the 10 gallon hoods

The birds nest and the Duncan's are likely going to be light needy. As well as sensitive to parameter changes. They may require some better light. Your parents would need to really be on top.... I would recommend using a 65 watt power compact from Lowe's. The make those in 6500K I believe it is and work well. I use one on my sump for a long time. You might do 2 of them and just use a clamp on type shop light with aluminium reflector. You can get these at Lowe's also for like 5-10 bucks each. Plus the bulb. So that's an easy fix. What about your fish?
