I have a Mantis

:scared: :scared: I have never heard anything or seen anything before last night. I was walking by the tank, and just happen to see it attacking a snail. It is in a hole smaller around then a pencil. I can just see its eyes

can you post a photo of it? I think that I have one but can't seem to catch it in the act.
Thanks

Good luck with the little bugger!

I had one. I took out the rock and dipped it in some REALLY SALTY water that I made up. The mantis came right out. It was about 3 inches long.

You can aslo trap them with a fish trap, just add some meaty bait inside and turn off the lights. I've seen them close to 12" long here in the Pacific, and before I knew what their real name was my friends and I just called them devil fish... red eyes and mean as hell when you got one in the boat by accident. Fresh water does a real number on them if you can issolate him.

well, i got the rock he is in in a ten gal tank. I cant dip in fresh water, because there is a huge xenia attached to the rock. I built a trap, and added some scallop. I just got home, and he was swimming around in the tank, but before i could get my rock out, he went back in, so i will see if he will go into the trap

this is gonna sound nuts, but I had to resort to this with a particularly impossible to catch mantis: I took a cordless drill with a long 3/4 inch wood bit, stuck it in the hole, and... well... the mantis came out alright, if you get my meaning... like in little mini mantis pieces... but the problem was very much over.

Wow you caught it without dipping the rock? I had to dip it to get my pistol shrimp out. You must be fast!!
hey was that my xenia attached to the rock?? I am glad you got him out because they will go through your snail population and hermits too, when I caught mine he had a boneyard for a gate to his castle!! Isnt this a fun hobby? My seahorse just had 55+ babies so the past couple days have been a blur to me. Carrie

They actually can be very pretty, but what do you guys plan on putting in the tank with a mantis shrimp? A whole tank just for them is kind of a waste IMO.
