my son had one when he was a baby and LOVED it. we got my daughter one when she was born and she LOVED it as well. they are snuggly and babies usually love cuddling up in them and sleeping. by far the best and most useful thing i had when my two were infants.

I'm not a huge fan of stuffed animals or toys as kids end up getting tons of them anyways and you won't remember who gave them what.

i dont know about blankies.... 1) you're not supposed to use them in the crib 2) they are good for snuggling while feeding and such, but one burpup and 3) i'd rather my daughter not get attached to a security blanket (the binkies are bad enough).
same with stuffed animals. gotta make sure they can't chew off something (eyes, nose, ears, etc), they get nastified from the saliva when they become teething toyes, and they don't know what todo with them for a while.

I appreciate all the responses. I'm thinking some sort of keepsake for the baby and, of course, a toy for the 2 yr old. Still have to find and order the gifts.
