how often should i change one of the cartridges? i have had many different answers... right now i just moved my 30 g tank into a 70 w/ 10 lbs live rock & sand, it has about 15 blue hermits, 5 snails, a percula and a peacock puffer (they are both about 3.5 inches long)
its been like 3 days everything is perfect but my nitrates are around 50, i haven't changed the cartridges in 3 months, only cleaned them in dirty water change water,
thanx

Drea, I have a 55 with 2 440 hang on's that each have a bio filter AND a charcoal filter cartridge. The directions on mine was to rinse out the charcoal filter every 2 weeks and then replace once at about 1 month. So 1 rinse at 2weeks and then at 4 weeks, I toss. NEVER touch the bio filter unless extremely gross and then rinse carefully in tank temp water. I have 65 lbs. of LR and 40 lbs. of CC AND 35 lbs. of LS on top of that. I know alot of ppl that do not like CC, so far, so good. Hope this helps.

You need a lot more hermit crabs and snails for your 70 gallon tank. I'd say about three times the amount of what you currently have.
