my brother has a friend. this friend is 19 years old. he's a good kid. he's in college. 8 mos ago, his dad died suddenly of a heart attack...everyone was stunned. 4mos later, his mom died in a car crash.
now he's all alone.
in a house.
with

[hr]
payments.
and no health insurance.
and no way to pay for college.
and today, his inguinal hernia ruptured, and he didn't go to the E.R. until my brother saw that his thigh had turned black.
my brother is in the hospital waiting with him.
WHY IS THERE NO HEALTH CARE IN THIS COUNTRY?
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO PEOPLE?
WHY ARE WE NEEDLESSLY DYING?
SO PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TO WAIT IN LONGER LINES???? B/C MY SENATOR'S WIFE WANTS BOOB IMPLANTS???????
this is the third person i know in 3days who's neglected to go for treatment b/c they couldn't AFFORD it... and i'll be DAMMED if I go to another funeral as a direct result of the health care crisis this year. so far I've been to FOUR.
I am so angry and upset and sad. this could have been helped. this could have been prevented. this could have been fixed.
His parents didn't make it, but he CAN.
oh my g-d I am beside myself.

Its called responsibility, people need to quit looking for a handout, maybe then there would be help when people actually needed it.

Now there's a typical Republican response...

But don't think universal healthcare will help.... he would have ruptured in that system as well, just waiting to be seen.

If he is at a State University and did not have insurance when he started he should have insurance through the school. My school charges you for the insurance unless you provide proof that you already have insurance.

I'm really sorry to hear about this. I agree, there is definitely a major health care crisis going on. It's a shame that people are mistaking a need for health care with wanting a hand out (ie: welfare), because they two are completely separate. There are also some truly good and worthy people who do deserve some sort of help because circumstances come up that are no cause of their own. I hope he gets better, and I really hope that someone fixes the health care problem here.

Well, I just found out that because of my company's lack of recent sales (due to dwindling economy), our health insurance premium deductions are going to triple. This is one of the factors in high insurance costs that families can't afford, and at this point I have no idea how I'm going to do it.

Sorry to hear about this poor kid, but a hospital would not turn him away with a condition like this. He needs to get it taken care of then get with a social worker that can help him. My wife is a physician and did her 6 years of training at a state funded hospital, I just asked her and she guessed roughly 30% of her patients in those 6 years had zero insurance. Help is there for people whom truly need it. People need to quite blaming the healthcare system for everything and become patient advocates.

I'm sorry for your friend but you need to take care of yourself. He is not the only person that has something happen to him like that...

I don't think too many of us plan to lose both our parents and have a major medical issue within a short period of time. I mean how many 19 year old kids that are in school would be ready for something like that.

I was talking about the parents... if you have have kids you should have some idea how they are going to get by if you are not around... but i guess thats too much to ask... i know if i die today all of my stuff will be paid for and no one will have to deal with anything but there grief...

the E.R.told him he needed a CT scan to see if his intestines were in the hernia along with all the pus. He refused the CT scan, but accepted anti-biotics. He's going to wait a few days to see if the meds help at all, but he'll go back if he's still got symptoms or a bump.
stupid. he should have had the imaging and then surgery to close the hernia. if his organs don't exit his body cavity now, they will eventually. hernias need to be repaired. i've assisted in that surgery a hundered times, it's very straigtforward - UNLESS you've got herniated organs. THEN it starts getting complicated. ::sigh::
thank you to everyone who sent prayers and concern, we are working with his Rabbi and synagogue and some of his local organizations. he's also got an older sibling I didn't know he had who's doing her best to help him out as well.
And to those of you with the evolutionary attitude; Yes. People should plan, people should work, people should make something of themselves (I do not believe in the welfare system, never have, never will), but no one should have to suffer and die. (I believe in universal healthcare. Always have, always will).

I understand where you are coming from but we cann't expect everyone out there to be responsible or have the means to be. We don't know the exact positions of the parents and whether they were at fault or victims of circumstance their son should not have to suffer. Maybe his parents had good jobs were in a good position to keep the debt in check but got laid off, the company I work for just tripled their their India Outsourcing Budget for 2009 from 800,000 to 2.5 million, that means alot of contractors will be out of the job and probably cann't afford the insurance the private insurance they have to buy, is that bad planning or Bad judgement or Bad Luck. I am not trying to argue just saying do we punish the sons for the sins of the father?
