@Oreo, very nice idea for a setup. Always wanted to add a refugium type tank to increase my water volume but wanted to make it interesting. Like making it into a seahorse tank only problem was I wanted it to be seen and not hidden under the tank. You've just given me a plan, now it's time to pass it by the old lady, THANKS.

i think it would be a bad idea trying a reef tank without the right equipment. its begging for failure in most hands. i think it would not be fair to its inhabitants either. Would you buy any other animal and not purchase items that are almost necisary for its health and sacrifice it for $ or space? not really......
