It means if I see a snake in the woods I am not going to crouch down and try to get a close look and then try and remember some poem that may or may not be right.
BTW if you see me running from a snake in the woods, I assure you that the screaming and arms waving over my head is purely a move to try and confuse the snake.

Straight from the Boy Scouts of America Handbook:
Red and Black- Friendly jack
Red and Yellow- deadly fellow
I'd say the snake you have pictured above is definately venomous

That's exactly how I was taught.
BTW...
http://www.floridaconservation.org/v...s/snakesv.html
from that site:
The coral snake's venom is the most potent of any of North America's snakes. This colorful species is closely related to the notorious cobra, krait, and mamba. The coral is shy and secretive, seldom aggressive unless startled, tormented or hurt. It has short fangs and a small mouth. It does not strike like the pit vipers but bites and chews to inject its poison. Especially vulnerable parts of the human anatomy to coral snake bites are fingers and toes. Most bites occur when a "pretty little snake" is picked up by someone who does not recognize it as a venomous one.

Wow...
Red and black, friend of Jack. Red and yellow, kill-a-fellow
You need to find your old boy scout leader and flog him!

Doc, if you were asking if my method works, I can guarantee that if for some reason the running, screaming arm waving method does not work then the thumb test will work. That is where you run far enough away from the snake and hold your arm out and stick up your thumb, when you are far enough away from the snake that your thumb covers the entire snake, then you are safe.

And that is why we had chickens, I tell you I saw our chickens kill a cotton mouth. That is one good bird.

A lot of snake lovers here would disagree with you on that one.
Please just relocate him, rather than kill him, however, take serious precautions.

Yep, if it was a scarlet king, I would have tried to get it to eat. But I have yet to find one. I relocated down the road a couple miles in some heavy brush woods. I don't mind having them around, but my neighbors would kill him for sure.

It's been a long time since I've seen one of those.......
I used to catch them by hand......just put a pair of gloves on...they have very small mouths and have a hard time biting anything large.
