Butterfly fish are generally not reef safe. But if you have a large tank with a ton of corals and you get a butterfly fish, you won't really notice much damage to the corals because there are so many.

Moorish Idols idols generally don't live past a year, they should be left to the experts.

Im not gonna lie here I dont have one, but my friend (the one who's tank inspired me to take up this hobby) does
he has a 240 with several anemone's, LPS, SPS, and a few softies
his butterfly does very minimal if any damage to corals however he does graze rocks, I'll ask but maybe he keeps it well fed
its the only butterfly he has, maybe golden's are an exception to the rule or maybe he got lucky with a good one
no denying though they're an awesome looking fish

True, but stil if you keep really good care of them they are good fish.

To those that have suggested a blue throat and a harlequin tusk for a reef, how are these two with starfish? I know shrimp and crabs are a snack but can starfish coexist?

The tusk is prolly going to go after any invert it can get unless it is really large but the bluethroat tends to not be as bad. I would make sure they cannot fit them into their mouth and you will be fine.....

I can tell you the blue throut will kill cleaner shrimp and pepermints, I had a pair and the left the hermits alone but the shrimp were an expensive dinner. And I overfeed the tank to try to make sure they would be ok.

thanks for the replies, I decided to go with a juvi emp angel. I'm willing to take the risk in my reef, and I can always sell my corals and go fish only.
