I use a Spectra Pure "Liter Meter". A little pricey but very reliable IMO. Do a search on this site if you want a DIY top off system, but IMO you can't go wrong with a Liter Meter. If you don't mind spending the $.

kent makes one, i heard you will have to adjust the drip-rate, its not expensive but i have no idea how much should be dripping

I have made myself what Kent sells as a Doser. Very simple DIY plan.
entice59, should be dripped daily the same amount of water which was evaporated daily. In other words: daily evaporation = 1 gallon(for example), drip rate should be adjusted so, that during the day it drips 1 gallon. 1 drip = 1/20 ml

That's pretty much simple. Here's the deal.
Draw the horizontal line or any mark on your sump (if you have sump) using marker. Now, wait 24 hours and see if something evaporated. Add fresh water to compensate the evaporated water. The amount of added water is your daily evaporation rate.
There probably will be difference between summer evap. rate and winter evap. rate, but it always can be compensated by adjusting the drip rate.
Here's the pic of how i check my evap. rate (see the sticker). Now it's not adjusted, because i added phosphate absorber.

Electronic float switches are more easily to use though. I will start building this kind of device myself next week as i cannot buy it in here.

I too use a litermeter, but I got lucky and got from a guy who was selling his stuff.
They are incrediably reliable!
