I need help...which pump?

I am in need of a water pump and can't decide between a eheim or mag. This will be used on a new sump. I hear mags are loud and cause heat, which I don't need. What do you folks think? If you have a favorite, please tell me why. This pump will not have a lot of head to worry about. The sump will be under my 110 DT. Tank not drilled, so using overflow and probably soft tubing to plumb. Thanks ya'll! Brenda

I'm setting up a new (larger) aquarium myself. And I've done a ton of research on every type of return pump there is. In the end I found the Eheim's to have the highest customer satisfaction. I chose to go with a Mag 24, simply because they do not make Eheims with as much flow as I wanted. Mag Drive is the industry standard (for submersible pumps). You will find a couple thousand people, on this board alone, who will defend Mag Drive as the best pump available. So the fact that Eheim is currently getting better customer reviews, in my mind, speaks volumes. What you said is correct, though not as dramatic. Eheims are reported to be more quiet and produce less heat, though depending on your tank location and design you may never notice the difference. I later learned that two smaller pumps connected in unison is a better alternative, in case one pump fails. Essentially, if I could go back and do it over I'd probably go with 2 Eheim 1262s. Depending on your overflow gph capacity you're probably going to want to go with two Eheim 1250s (634 gph before calculating plumbing height/head pressure). Good luck with whatever you decide.

Putting a piece of foam under a mag makes a huge difference. I used a foam mouse pad that I cut a square out of. LOL! Just thought your friend might like to know.

This will be in the living room....so... needs to be kinda quite--LOL anyway, I am still trying to decide on the flow I need, and if I need double overflows as in two bulk heads in one overflow or not, I have researched and researched and still have so many questions and debating back and forth, but, want to do things right the first time and would rather have more pump power than not eneough because I could always cut back the power if need be, but if its not strong eneough--tough luck. Thanks guys, I appreciate it so much! Would love to hear some more " this pump and why I love it" stuff.

Have you tried the mouse pad thing as mentioned above? I am wondering and it makes a lot of sence that it would work, if you try it out, let us know! Thanks again! Brenda

I know you didn't ask about any other pumps, but there is one that is called Sequence Reeflo and those have higher flow values but of course they are quite a bit more expensive. Those pumps are quiet and produce very little heat.

I use a Mag 9.5 on my 90 and seem to be working fine for me so far (tank has been up and running for about 3 weeks now). Since the bottom of my stand was open, I placed the padding you use under wood floors to put under my sump on our wood floor and I don't hear any noise from the pump.

Thanks a lot for all the info,now, does anyone know about what I would need as far as flow for a 110? I dont know if I need a double overflow--hang on back type or two single ones, one for each side of the tank? Thanks again in advance! Brenda

The amount of flow is kind of up to you there really isn't any wrong or right answer it depends on your sump design and what you are trying to accomplish in the sump. I would not go with less than 800gph but I don't see the benefit of running anything over 1600gph as far as filtration goes. Many people are trying to increase the flow through there DT by running it through the sump and a large return pump instead of multiple power heads in the DT, but IMO a dedicated closed loop is more efficient than trying to run all of your flow through your sump.
For overflows I would use two singles on each side of the tank two will make surface skimming more efficient.
