I need quiet!

this may be a stupid question but how do I quiet down my overflow? If I put anything in line I'm afraid it will back up.

I don't think there is a way for you to quite it down. I guess you get used to it after awhile. I did with my back filters running, I find the sound of the running water soothing. But the overflow I am sure is noisier. Good luck on finding anything.

You can do several things depending on the type of OF you have. If you have an internal box (drilled tank) you can modify the stand pipe and raise the water level in the box. I personally use the Durso stand pipe mod and it's pretty darn quite. If you have an external OF I really can't help you there because I don't know.

I have an external overflow box and it was terribly noisy. Sounded like a toilet gurgling! We put a piece of filter pad in the bottom over the drain hole and it quieted it a lot. Then I was a little worried that somehow the pad would go down the hole and plug it so we made a grate to go over the hole just for insurance. I hear trickles now, but nothing like it was.

I dropped a bio ball down the hole going to the sump. I don't hear any noise now. Also try sticking a piece of airline tubing down the drain.

I too tried EVERYTHING. I put bioballs over the tube, installed a ball valve, and everything I could think of. Nothing worked until....
The solution was so easy.....
Take about 3 pieces of airline tubing, different lengths. I use about 12", 15" and 18". Tape them together on one end. Stick the other ends down your return tube (the one that goes to your sump) and move the airlines up and down until the noise stops.
It worked wonderful for me. I'm using an external overflow, but I have been told this works on an internal one as well.
Good luck!

On my CPR overflow I ended up removing the pre-filter sponge that sits in the bottom of the over flow. I seams a lot quiter without it.

all good -- -thanks!
Richard - the "faucet" idea (durso) for the overflow standpipe is great. I have an external overflow, but I am thinking of drilling my tanks --- didn't b/c I was concerend about the standpipe noise - might do it now!
But - before I try that I'm gonna try Fishycouple's idea - not sure why that would work, but cheap and easy is always worth a try!
Thanks eveyone, I'll update tonight after I try the airtube idea.

I have an external OF. The drain is 1" ID (Inner Diameter). I used to pieces of tubing 1/2" ID. Stick both tubing pieces (airhoses) in thw drian and play with different depths. I plugged to small pieces of foam in the ends of the airhoses sticking out. The only noises I hear are the fans of my lighting hood and a little bit of trickling!

Thanks everyone. I tried the airhose idea, it kinda worked, it goes almost silent, then almost back to normal, then silent again --- better than before though!
I'll eventually try out the Durso --- that's a smart idea!
