I bought a large seahorse and all he will eat is live food....copapods..live brine,,,neither of which I have available here. I need to find some quickly. The live brine I can order from the place I bought the horse...but I`d like to get some pods too....he cleaned out all that were in his tank the moment he moved in.Any suggestions??

there are a couple of places. I don't think swf would appreciate posting them. But, if you do a search for detrivores you should bring something up. Maybe detrivore kit. ;)

Sheree , have you tried mysis shrimp ? I have 'heard' that sea horses will take it. I have never tried it or even kept sea horses. But maybe it is worth a try.

I have a friend that raises Sea Horses and the best thing to feed that he found out is Ghost Shrimp (live) they can get a little pricey but they eat about 3 a day each, maybe you could buy them in bulk somewhere.

Can I ask if you were told what seahorses eat before you bought it? You will need a constant supply of live food. There is plenty of info out there. Please read it all,as they are not easy to keep.

Don't waste your time trying to hatch brine shrimp to use as a constant source of food. It just won't work.

Why not? I've done it plenty of times in the past, and not just Brine Shrimp mind you. Many people raise Rotifers, Brine Shrimp, ZooPlankton, Mysid Shrimp, etc to feed to their fish, so I don't see why Sheree can't do it.
PS I've never tried to raise Mysid Shrimp myself, so I'm unsure as to what you would need to set up to accomplish that, but I know that there are some people on this board who will be willing to help out.

I have kept seahorses before...but,,,I lived IN Fla where any type of live food was readily available. They will eat almost anything that swims past them...I did bring some ghost shrimp home with us when I bought him...caught them myself in the gulf but hes eaten those already(a few left). Just lining up future food. As for hatching brine ---trying to raise them to adult size as I type...newly hatched WAYyyyyy to small for this guy.
Hairtrigger- any shops in Atlanta have the live brine, I`d make the drive every week for some?? Email me if you know of any please?

Demo,my point was that unless you raise brine shrimp to full grown size, the seahorses won't benefit. That's harder to do than raise seahorses.

I've heard of people keeping molly's in with their seahorses for this reason, my LFS did that for a long time

As I recall I raised some pretty heffty sea monkeys when I was a kid untill my aunt knocked them over one day, filled it full of water and didn't tell me for years. I also think that younger brine shrimp are more nutrient rich vs adult brine. As to if it could sustain a constant food supply I am not sure, however every little bit will help.

Were the seahorses tank-raised or wild-caught? Usually, tank-raised will accept frozen foods. However, most wild-caught come in with diseases. Did you quarantine them? I heard mysis shrimp are some of the best things for seahorses. Try this website, they know tons about seahorses www.seahorse.org HTH

Yes. I think pretty much all of them around here do. Duh. I didn't even think about that. The Fish Store and More in Buckhead does. (I am pretty sure)
Pets Etc in Marietta I know for sure does. First exit after you go under 285 while driving on 75.
I believe Marine Fish on Johnson Ferry Rd near Sandy Springs does.
I know Petland in Dunwoody, on Ashford Dunwoody rd does.
So does Pet land on 141, peachtree industrial, in Alpharetta. But the store is listed as Duluth I think.

I hand feed my seahorse and she is a black one looks just like yours. I feed her frozen hikari mysis shrimp. You want to make sure that your mysis have bee nfortified or something becuse seahorses don't have a stomach so they metabolize everything very fast.
try getting a pair of tweezers and after thawing out your mysis in some saltwater grab the mysis by the tip of the tail (make sure it still has it's head because seahorses like the eyes for some reason) Wiggle your shrimp in front of her face for a bit back anf forth so that it looks like it's swimming aroun a bit in front of her. . .she should take it. . .mine did and loves frozen now.
good luck!
