I officially dislike the people of this country.

I am fed up with the population looking at the government with their hand out.
.

I've been thinking about this same stuff man, I feel your pain.
I think maybe the people in this country deserve a depression so they can see what hard times really are. I saw a survey that counted the percentage of people living in povery (on public assistance) who owned cell phones. You can't afford food but by god you will have your cell phone.
Gotta give Bush credit for having the guts to take on Social Security whether you liked his plan or not. That was the start in his downward trend in popularity. I haven't noticed a Democrat alternative being worked on since they have been in control of Congress. No Guts.
On the other hand Bush adds drug coverage to Medicare before fixing it's solvency problems. As bad as that was the other side attacked him because the plan wasn't generous enough.
The government offers CHIP's for lower income people to get cheap healthcare for their kids and they *self edit*
because of a proposed 25.00 a month premium that covered all their kids and even included dental and eye care.
Now we have Obama promising to give people that don't pay income tax now (and in most cases are getting paid through earned income credit) a new "tax cut". Let's not call it welfare because those receiving it might feel bad. You know, I have nothing but respect for people who swallow their pride for the good of their kids and ask for assistance but let's make sure those receiving it truly deserve it. No able bodied person should get a penny's worth of assistance if they aren't working at least 40 hours a week. If there aren't jobs available there are plenty of jobs local government pay to have done that folks on assistance could do until they could find a real job again. Of course the unions would never let that happen. More government employees = more union dues.
I remember when unions were more concerned with working conditions than pushing a political agenda and getting rich.
Bush might suck but his approval rating is double that of Congress. Yet by all indications the voters are going to hand those D cup boobs Harry and Nancy even larger majorities and elect Obama who is ever more left wing than them. With the economic fallout I can understand people wanting to move in a different direction and thinking, right or wrong that Obama is the way to go. But with politicians like Christopher Dodd and Barney Frank ignored and even disputed the trouble at Fanny and Freddie, and Dodd doing so after taking huge amounts of campaign contributions from them I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would vote to keep the Democrats in charge of congress.
People are dumb

I'm pretty frustrated as well, and don't see a way of voting without feeling soiled and like I betrayed what I believe in. Both candidates voted bailout, which I strongly oppose (as do most Economists). And the thing is....they continue to throw billions more money into bailing out. Disgusting. McCain, at this point, will offer anything and everything if it will help him along in his failing campaign. Unfortunately, while trying to appeal to uncommitted voters and Independents (like me) he lost his conservative base. He won't win without them. I think many of those will just stay home and who can blame them? In the long run, it is probably better for conservatives if they do stay home, because then they can work on what happens 4 yrs from now, instead of dragging a millstone (McCain) around their neck for possibly 8 more years.
Obama, a nice, likable individual, who is obviously intelligent. Judgment though?? Not there when it comes to picking who he hangs with that's for sure. Unfortunately, some of these are downright SCARY people. It makes my heart skip a few beats just thinking of it.

In short, both parties are to blame for everything and the people, ourselves, hold the highest blame, because no matter if republican or democrat, in one form another we have our hand out.
Let me first say that this discussion has been very interesting, thought provoking, at times funny, and generally well written. Now, on to this "republican or democrat" issue.
I've been saying for a long time that I am sick to death of all politicians. In America you can vote Republican or Democrat. (If you think you're backing someone who actually can win.) Some people will tell you that voting for a different party is throwing your vote away. I couldn't disagree more. Choosing the better of two bad possibilities is not an option I am willing to consider.
People talk alot about wanting politicians to reach across the aisle.
THE PROBLEM WITH AMERICA IS THAT THERE'S ONLY ONE AISLE!

In November, I will be writing in the candidates from my personal dream team.
I call it the Common Sense/Kick Ass Party.
Bill Cosby For President and Ted Nugent for V.P!

They just took down the Deficit Clock in Times Square because they needed to remove the dollar sign. Wasn't enough digits on it to show $10 TRILLION. I think they're modifying it so it can show QUADRILLION. I also heard to completely get this country out of debt, each household would have to contribute $460,000
before it's over with.
As far as Social Security, that program has been broken since the 60's. The big issue is you now have all the Baby Boomers entering retirement, and there's not enough in the SS Bank to go around. The only reason I haven't complained about not getting my share, is because I know the money I've been putting into it all these years is going to my 83 year old mother. The last time I got one of those SS statements, I think it said I would get $2500/month if I continue working until I'm 65. That's 13 years for me. With inflation going up, what, 5% a year, could I live comfortably on $28,000/year? That's why they always told us to invest in the market, or IRA's, or 401K's... to insure you had adequately money to live the lifestyle you're used to when you retire. They always said SS wouldn't be enough. Now with the current setback in the economy, I guess I'll have to take whatever I can get.
Darth, I feel your frustration. I too am sick of people just voting the Party Lines. We need an non partisan government if we want this country to get back on its feet. A Ron Paul or T. Boone Pickens is the type of person who could probably do a heck of alot better job as President than these two idiots we have to choose from. Problem is, our voting system doesn't allow for Independent candidates. Yea, you hear them say they can run, but look what they have to go through just to get their names on every ballot in the country... $$$$$$$$$$. The Average Joe Citizen could never run, because they don't have $80 million in the bank for a campaign. Then you have to get past the Electoral College Voting System. It's only geared towards a Republican or Democrat nominee. The President is no longer nominated 'By The People'. The position is nominated by less than a fourth of the people in this country. The ones who live in the Swing States. My vote is stymied in Texas, because it's been a Republican State since '76. Unless another event like Watergate happens, no Democrat or Independent would ever get the Texas vote. If you want Change, change the way we vote the President of this nation in. On top of that, change the Constitution to limit Congressional Terms. We limit the President to 8 years. Do it for everyone else in this government. Do this, and maybe things can get turned around where 'We The People' means something again.

I'd vote for that ticket, Jello and ARs for everyone

Darthtang,
I appreciate your thoughts on this and agree to a large extent. The question is not what might be wrong, the question is how to correct it. I'd absolutely love to destroy the power base of the two main parties and IME we have neither been willing nor able to vote them out, not many good candidates would go through the public/media scrutiny it takes to run. My life should not be an entirely open book to run for President and I'm tempted to allow these positions to pay more money, a lot more if it would attract better candidates.
From what I can tell, the best method would be some sort of reform bill, rule, or amendment regarding campaign finance reform in which money is pooled and distributed equally between all individuals with the required number of petition signatures. This might enable some less well financed platforms to be at least on the same stage with the major parties. Both Ds and Rs would fight it tooth and nail though so it would really need to be done in a grass-roots way with the populace ratifying it to amend the Constitution, I know - it's never been done but the mechanism is in place should we decide to do it. If you could do it though, could destroy the power bases of the RNC and DNC. Strangle the money flow and you strangle the power base. Add a balanced budget amendment and now we're really getting somewhere. But as you say, mayhaps we are just too lazy.
Also, wouldn't ya love to see a debate in which the candidates asked each other questions rather than the method we have now? We'd be able to see them face to face and see how they react unscripted. To add a 3rd, 4th, 5th candidate to the mix would be priceless. Add a moderator to keep the fists from flying and see how well these guys know their stuff.
Just some things I thought I'd throw out there.
