Okay, my recently purchased Blue Hippo went through a period last night where he was scratching himself on my rock. He only did this for about a half an hour and during the same time he had what looked like undigested hair algae hanging out of his "you know what".
I quarantined him for two weeks with no sign of any disease. I have not seen him exhibit this behavior at any other time.
Does this mean that he has ich or could he have possibly been trying to dislodge whatever it was that was hanging out of him?

He probably has or did have ich. my hippo tang occasionally does the same thing when something is bothering him.. hippo tangs are very suseptable to ich and can normally aquire it in even verely well established tanks..a very good way to take caare of the problem is get yourself a cleaner wrasse if you don't already. it'll eat the ich right off of him.. so will cleaner shrimp.
