i had a seaclone and it worked fine for me. i know everyone has their opinion on them.... read alot of threads and commented in the past. mine was so loud that i finally decided to remove it from the system. then one day i put it back in, then took it back out. it has been out for awhile now. anybody have success stories with no skimmer? i would like to hear them to make myself feel better, lol.

I've seen many people running amazing tanks without skimmer, I guess it's just a matter of keeping up with water changes. I ran a 55g for over a year without a skimmer and I never had any issues. I just kept doing water changes; 10%-15% per week.
Now I have a 125 and doing that much water changes is too much now so I'm just running a skimmer now and doing 10-20 every 3 weeks.
I guess it pretty much depends on each one's habits on how they maintain their own tank

I have three tanks running right now with no skimmer. The skimmer helps, but it is not necessary.

I only run mine 2 weeks out of the month. Since I started this I have noticed an increase in growth in my corals but it could just be a coincidence

soft corals such as xenias, zoanthids, mushroom and colt coral does well on nutrient rich water.that is why my soft coral tank will be without skimmer but a frequent water change are really needed.

Seen a beautiful reef of 12 years with no sump or skimmer. Does a water change ever week and his tank makes me jealous.
Not need if you are on your water changes... mine run half the time --due to my lack of time/laziness usually but I run sumps on my tanks full of cheato.
No not needed... just an added benefit.

but if you don't want to change water often you should invest on a very good skimmer. i used to change my water every 4 months on my current tank with some sps now that its mostly sps i change my water every month.like i post earlier soft corals does best when the nutrient are slightly elevated 10 to 20 ppm ( nitrate) IMO/ experience but without a protein skimmer it might be higher if you don't change your water weekly religiously.

i have 2 sea clones. they are very good skimmers. i like them a lot but once they grow algae in the tubes its game over. i was using the size 100 model, now that its full of hair algae i removed it and washed it until it was all gone. i went and bought a size 150 model and hooked it up to my 30gal. i have an extra skimmer that i will hook up to another tank one day. lol its too much nature power. sadly the new 150 model has a small leak and i can not return it anymore, but im still using it. i placed a folded paper towel where the leak is. so i guess its ok. i hope.
my nitrates are all at 0.
the noise doesn't bother me at all.
but B4 i got the size 150 model i didnt have a skimmer on my tank for over 2 months and nothing happened. i guess u really dont need one, unless u have SPS coral.
good luck

+1 I agree
Personally, I run a skimmer. But it pulls the food out from the corals as well so I have to feed it more often, but I like to overkill on water quality. That's just me.

My best friend has an incredible soft coral tank and he has never run a protein skimmer in his life, and he has not done a water change in in over 5 years. So, don't let everything people tell you be gospel.

i had built a scrubber about a year ago i guess and i swear by them. since i installed it n and p at zero. had just recently built a new one so waiting on algae growth right now. i was feeding of the drain line. now im feeding the scrubber from a pump in the sump. i will try to post some pics when i get home.
