i have always had mostly reef tanks.i did have a 150 fowlr for a while.now this winter i plan to get my 500 gallon reef going and just might keep my 250 for an aggressive tank.i have always wanted a clown trigger or another cool trigger .very aggressive fish.now 250 will be plenty big but really what can go with this guy .i would buy him at least 5-6 inches big to start.an eel would be cool,i read no tangs or lions.i assume no angels.i do not want to experiment with personalities.i dont want to run a tank this big with just one fish.i would be happy with 3 or 4 in there since they grow so big.so the people here with an aggressive tank i could use some help of personal experiences of mixing nasty triggers and other fish/eels
thanks

Clown Triggers are always very risky, as are many of the "superbad" Triggers (Undy, Queen, Titan, and so on). 250 is certainly a reasonable sized tank....If you were going to do a Clown Trigger with other fish, I would look for fast, active swimmers capable of defending themselves.
Lunare, or Banana Wrasse....Very fast and active, capable of defending itself, plus beautiful fish! Other less pretty (IMO) but even more capable Wrasses would be Broomtail or Red Breasted Wrasse.
Sohal Tang....Not sure whom told you "no Tangs" but Tangs, particularly Acanthurus genus are very capable of cohabitating with other highly aggressive fish.
I'm not a huge fan, but there are some pretty Groupers that could hang...Miniatus would be my first choice

thanks trig.i would love a sohal tang with the clown triggger.i also like the unidated(spelling) trigger.i had a cherry grouper way back he was nasty and ate my lionfish .couldnt believe it.but a sweet looking fish.i would be happy to have 3 or 4 fish in the 250 .no more

Pal if you have the $$$$ and can find one get a Crosshatch Triggerfish (Xanthichthys mento). And really get some tank envy

my fish supplier gets them in pairs for i think $700 for the pair.but can they handle an aggressive tankmate?
plus i will have to recover from the other tank first.so might be a while.

well if you go for the pair
I would make them the center piece and go with an eel and some less aggressive fish

makes sense.i have seen them a few times at my suppliers.they are just an awesome fish.pictures dont do them justice.but have to get the other tank going first.i figured the 250 is allset up.i have an extra big canister filter and plenty of equiptment to get it going.i figure i wont get next to no money for the set up these days so i would just need some live rock for it.i have 2 mp40's on it now and the new tank is one inch thick and it says they dont work on that thickness glass.i have to buy a couple mp 60's for the new tank.
i figure if i just do 4 fish or so in the 250 maintanance wont be bad at all.we will see.have to build the house first

How about a toadfish? Or a panther grouper? Puffer?
I LOVE agressive tanks..
Panther Grouper would work, but ugly in my opinion as adults....I'm no toadfish expert, but I wouldn't.
Puffers do great with most Triggers, but I am leary of Clown Trigger nipping on them. Puffers are kind of "clumbsy" (did I spell that right) swimmers, I wouldn't trust a CT with puffers for any slow or awkward moving fish.
DeeJeff, I got my Crosshatch pair for $460, let me know if you are ever interested, I would PM you. It's a LFS here in Phoenix, but they ship the "rare" fish they have anywhere for no charge. They are regarded as one of the best LFS's in the country, they QT every fish for a month before it hits the store. As far as with a CT, I think if introduced first, it could work, my 8 inch Male is a B.A. fish. I wouldn't do it personally, I like the tank you have in mind. Crosshatch are rare and interesting, but a Clown Trigger is about my favorite.

Why, what's wrong with a toadfish? They are very interesting fish.. and if you want aggressive, a toadfish is the definition. No fish will bother one because they lay on the rocks... but a toad could easily defend themselves.... Panther Groupers are not ugly as adults. But I guess that is personal opinion. I have to agree with the puffer idea...
