there is no way to tell this. It could be a very long time beofre they spawn. up to a year. If they are geting ready after lights out or close to it they will do the "dance" and soon after lay the eggs. its best to LEAVE THEM ALONE shining a flash light every ten min to check on them IS NOT helpful. I know it sucks but the best bet is to just wait. one day you'll get up and find eggs. MAYBE

I sure hope something happens, if I see one more post about your frantic breeding needs I might smash my head through this keyboard.

I guess I'm just a tad tired tonight, I could have said "you'll have to just wait and see" to Clown123 but I was tired of repeating it. You'll have to do a search on the last posts hes created and all the advice people have already given.
My appologies clown123, the whole pushing fish to breed in a new tank doesn't sit well with me.

I apologize as well. I did not mean to upset anyone. I am sure all of you "pros" get tired of answering the same questions for us newbies.
We thank you all though.

No No not at all, like I said.... The same question asked by different posters is one thing, but when the same poster keeps asking the same question and we keep answering it the same way it gets a tad frustrating.
I'm far from pro, I'm in the hobby about a year and a half and just happen to have a pair of clowns so I have experience in this one little part of the hobby.
Clown123, I'm not upset with you I'm just frustrated that it seems like your not reading what we are trying to tell you.

If you don't have anything positive to add to a thread it's generally a good idea to just go on to the next thread without posting.

Will paired clowns generally mate in a normal healthy saltwater fish tank? Or do they "do it" under special circumstances? I am just asking because I have a pair and never really thought about it..

Producing eggs is a great burden on the female nutritionally speaking. If they are overfed they will probably spawn. If they are fed a normal amount of food they will sometimes spawn but not always.

So it's good to overfeed clowns if you want them to spawn? And how do you tell if it's a male and a female?
