I use IO.
Here is something that will make some people cringe.
I only change my water about once a month and when i do i only do about 6 gallons.
sometimes i dont do it at all.
I feel that with a proper balance of filtration(your rock ,sand, and skimmer)
and a light fish bioload you can have a nearly self maintaining eco system. the biggest thing i do to our reef only a every other day basis is keep the glass clean.
IMO this hobby is made WAY to complicated by some people. you do not need all these crazy do-dads and gagets that many use. Dont get me wrong. some of them have their place in certain systems but i think that with proper planing and a careful selection of livestock you can spend alot more time enjoying your reef and alot less time tinkering with un-needed equipment.
to have a great tank you NEED the following items ONLY IMO
a tank
RODI unit
salt
sand(some debate this one)
Live rock
A good Skimmer
Great lighting
and most importantly you need PATIANTS
thats it!

Sorry to hijack thread, just want your knowledge

yes i do have a bit of a low ALK but stability is key. i dont mess with it . the tank is happy so i am happy. BTW that CA is rather high make sure you dont end up with a winter wonder land. if you alk keeps droping and your ca goes up to much more it could be snow time.

thanks again
That seems impossible to have Calcium that high with no Kalk or anything. What type of salt do you use??? Or is it natural? What about test kit for Calcium....what kind do you use. I would love to know how you do that.

Are you saying that the calcium will just start accumulating, or that your kalkwasser drips won't disperse?

WOW!!!! Is that a clam stuck there in the middle? That is BEAAAAAUTIFULL. LOL. I have the luxury of stocking for cheap. The only thing is that I can not get them right away, LOL. I got this guy that runs the LFS in town here that given two weeks notice, can get me any coral that I want. Not a single coral is over 15-20 bucks including hard and soft - clams etc....and I have never seen a frag that was over 9 bucks out of about 200 that he has. Just picked up a brown toadstool leather and some neon orange zoos for 7 bucks for the both of them. SWEET!!! Is what it is.

meaning that if the CA in a tank goes to high it will look like its snowing in your tank. there will be a white power over everything in the tank. very odd looking.
in most cases you will also lose alot of the corals

I use IO salts. I have several different test kits. you should never use just one. always try different brands at the same to and compare them. i use three kits and then use the number in the middle of all of them if they differ. most of the time they are all very close to one another

White snow.I had alot of trouble with cal. then found the problem was my alk. I do have the some of the snow. I hope I caught it in time. What do you do about it? I have been doing water changes, will it go away?

The calcium wil precipitate out of solution. Not really accumulating, but the chemical equation will be pushed so far in one direction that you get white calcium crystals (precipatates) no longer dissolved in the water, but instead falling out of the water and covering everything.
