I have not seen conclusive studies that indicate that leathers impact other corals including SPS, by just being in the same tank.
However, I have seen it mentioned several times that some think they do.
I am not talking about touching of course.
Where I have seen it discussed, the concern was primarily when there were either a lot of leathers or very large leathers.
According to them, if you run carbon, you can help mitigate your risks.
Sorry I cannot be more definitive, but I have not seen an impact personally or read any literature that has conclusively determined the impacts.

some say leathers will mess with sps, some say it wont. it really depends on which leathers u hv. most leathers like toadstools r fine. i hv a huge toadstool in my tank with sps, and i havent seen any adverse effect.

I had a huge colt coral that was dying and releasing a whole lot of browish thick slime. It was causing all my corals including all sps not to open or have any kind of polyp extention. It was also making protein skimmer go crazy. I had to remove the colt coral. After a couple days of removing the colt everything went back to normal. Nothin was killed. U can deffinetly have sps corals with leathers just try not to piss the leathers off to much.

I would try a monti cap as they're almost impossible to kill. Anything montipora should be very hardy. Just get a small bit then go from there. That's what I did. I had my red cap for a while, and it did well so I got a pink birdsnest frag. That went well so I got into SPS more. Just take it slow and you should have SPS success.
