I think my snails are sick.

Hello,
Among the critters I have in my tank I have 4 large turbo snails. I've noticed that they have not moved much in the last 48 hours, and the two that are currently sticking on the glass appear shriveled. They all still move around a little bit, but they haven't wandered the tank much at all. I've also noticed that once in a while a couple of them look like they are going to completely seperate out of their shell before retreating back in and going back to "sleep mode."
I did recently do a few things with the tank that may have affected them (but I don't know which action is the culprit).
1. I noticed my nitrate was rising so I did a 25% water change and washed my filter pads in clean saltwater in 1 day (I usually do a water change one day and a filter pad wash another day). I also added some AmQuell solution to the tank after doing the water change.
2. I usually feed my tank some frozen brine shrip cubes. However, right before I noticed my snails acting unusual, I accidentally left the container of frozen brine out overnight, so the whole can melted. I refroze it and then crushed the frozen block of brine with a pair of pliers into smaller pieces.
So I am wondering if perhaps the snails are sensitive to the AmQuell or did the brine go bad, or is the fact that a piece of metal (the pliers) touched the food somehow tainted it? By the way, none of the other tank inhabitants seem affected at all, just the snails. Although, my Firefish has gotten kind of shy, but I don't really know if this has anything to do with it.
Also, is there anything that could be done to improve the snail's condition or just wait it out and hope they get better?

snails are touchy creatures to both water parameters and anything else!
Ur food melting is no good. Throw it away and get new stuff. Preferably PE mysis.
Dont use ur pliers either get some tongs at ***** or something. I got mine from petsmart in the reptile ile.
When cleaning ur filter media, dont use tap water, use ur old water from the water change.
Best advice i can give u!

Yeah I felt iffy about using pliers to crush my brine but it was all that I had at the time (didn't think of going out to buy something new to crush it). So you think maybe the brine is just bad?
For the record, after I did my water change I still had some left over clean saltwater, not tap water, so I washed my filter pads in that.

k well good glad to hear u didnt use tap to clean the filters.
Ya un frozen food and re freezing it is no good! Use a hammer and put it on the floor and beat it! Stress reliever and its kool hehe
Brine shrimp is like feeding a kid popcorn. Fills em up and they love it but no nutrition! Best way ive heard it described. Get PE mysis or H20 foods.....Rods is best though

Amquell is outstanding at detoxifying ammonia. Unfortulately a lot of oxygen is consumed during the process. If the snails happened to be in a low flow area they could have suffered from oxygen deprivation. This is actually fairly uncommon but it can happen. Especially is Amquel is used in an environment that has no ammonia to detoxify.

Besides all of the above, sometimes snails, esp. turbos simply never do well. You can have some that are bulletproof, while others just never quite make it. I don't believe you mentioned how long you've had the snails. Also, 4 large turbos would stock a 100 gal tank easily...could they be starving?
and for SURE...toss out the refrozen brine!

Thanks for the input everyone ^_^
Well, its been a few days and 3 of the snails seem to be back to normal. The 4th nail however, closed up in his shell and hasn't moved moved at all in the last 2 days. How long should I give it until I consider it dead?

I have 2 cerith snails that are baffling.
They've been in the tank for about a year. They will find a depression in the rock and just sit there, sometimes for 2 weeks at a time.
Twice I've thought they were dead, tried to pull them out of the tank only to have them hunker down tightly against my pull.
Then, they get moving, go on a feeding binge for a day or so, then find a new spot to sit for a week or two.

seriously man they smell like rotten eggs when they die! IMO just leave it be....ur hermits or watever may snack on it, usually its the bristle worms that munch mine down.

Well.. I am now pretty sure its dead. I took it out to have a smell, and it smelled like a pier seafood market... that and the other sign was when gravity took over when I held the shell upright... he opened up, fell out, and made a nice black splatter on the floor... ewwwww lol!
So I think the next time I do a water change I'm going to wash the shell and put it back in the tank for a hermit crab if one ever gets big enough.
