I wonder why Barack Obama and Tiger Woods are considered "African American"

I mean I was Born here in the U.S. in NYC to both ASIAN and LATINO immigrants which I am both proudly and freely disclose to those who ask but I do not play favoritism to either ethnicity, Nor would I prefer to be endorsed by either ethnicity as well. People ask me "where are you from?" I tell them "NYC" lol and then if they as me "what ethnicity am I?" I always say ASIAN/LATIN but NEVER one or the other. I mean why cant the news media say ASIAN/AFRICAN AMERiCAN regarding Tiger Woods considering he is HALF Thai and Barack seems to be worse in my opinion Only mentioning his Caucasian Grandmother and her racist biased without hardly ever mentioning his caucasian mother..
just my 2 cents..

Obama IS African-American....his father was African, his mother was American. Of course, I'd prefer it American-African, but that's splitting hairs.
as for Tiger, I have no idea what he is, I don't watch golf. I know he's probably the greatest golfer ever though.

There is some kind of rule that your race is based on. something like the percentage or parentage or something. if one of you parents are black, you are legally considered black. don't ask me why this is, I didn't make up the rule.
I also don't know why my county jail's booking site has Latinos listed as "white". either they are too lazy to update their system, or they are trying to drive up the white crime rate.

It has to do with Spaniards. Basically, the Spaniard is European, and considered caucasian, therefore, the "hispanic-ness" is considered a subset of caucasian.

Just to clarify, Tiger is in fact more Asian than African American...His mother is pure Thai, his father actually has some Native American in him. He is 1/2 Thai, 7/16th African American, and 1/16th Native American.
As for my little munchkin 1/2 Vietnamese (my wife) then from me Dutch, Scottish, Irish, and German.. Asian/Dut-scot-ir-ger I think

Oh, and I agree with you Heatlovr.

But what do you put down, if you're half white, and half mexican, but the mexican half my great grandparents are from China, and Italy went to mexico and stayed. Am I chin-mexi-ital-merican. Where is that on the census check boxes?

hold on. you say you're half Mexican because your Chinese/Italian grandparents moved to Mexico? um, no. relocating to a Hispanic country does not make one Hispanic. unless of course you meant your parents were born in and then married someone who was from Mexico.
unless you mean what "nationality" would you put down, which is not the same as race. but there is no half/half when it comes to nationality (unless you have dual citizenship), so you would still be American.

if race didn't matter, 90% of the earth's population would not have nearly as much to complain about. and since people, particularly Americans, love to complain, I don't see any race issue dying down anytime soon.

Pontius I agree...some will complain that America isn't ready for a black president if BHO doesn't win...but even if he does win, anytime anyone opposes him on a policy, out will come race again.

Well, my grandpa married a national. So yeah. it is puzzling. Wait but she had been born in el paso, then moved back to mexico after the war...
