Ok, lkgrenegade has a floating hydrometer, if I remember that, and said he was ordering a refractometer.
Refracts are best choice for use in hypo. It give the most precise reading. And precision is what is needed for hypo to be successful. Saying that, I have used floating glass hydrometers, even two measured against each other, with success in hypo.
Refracts measure both salinity (ppt) and specific gravity. You want to aim at 14ppt salinity and 1.009 specific gravity.
So I think what Beth is telling you is that you might can get by with the floating deal if it is the only option you have.
I just didn't want to spend the time (4-6 weeks) doing hypo and then not be certain I would have results so I bought the refractometer.

Right, if the floater is all you have, it could very well be fine. You will need to turn off your pumps to take the measurement under calm waters. And use a magnifying glass to get a detailed view of where the specific gravity measurement is. Refractometers are not that expensive anymore, so if you can get one, look around online for a deal.

Well I am self employed and due to the holidays my buisness is dry, it should pick back up after the first of the year. I just can't afford to buy ANYTHING for the tank until then, it's either take care of the tank or buy christmas for the kids. Hey and they're my kids what can you do?
All of the fish that had visible spots have all died and I freshwater dipped the rest so I will treat them the best I can with hypo and keep an eye on them over the next 6 weeks to make sure there are no spots.
I'm pretty much done with tangs, their skin is just too prone to infections. Everytime I say this I end up buying another one. I think I might actually try to put a flame angel and a lemonpeel in the same tank. Might be dumb but I have heard people have had success with it in tanks 75 and larger.

I had a Coral Beauty and a Flame and had no problems.
If you really need it I will send you my refractometer when I done with hypo next week.
