Ick debate

there was a whole thread on another board I am on about Ick. Two guys told the new guy to treat his hippo with garlic and it would take care of the problem and some cleaner shrimp would clean them off. I posted and from what I had learned on THIS board is that garlic and cleaner shrimp do nothing to cure ick let alone clean it from the tank. I said they should QT all the fish... and leave the tank empty for 30 days to clean the tank. They have had two outbreaks of ick so far. That was imo the only way to guarantee it Ick free. Am I right on any of this?

Yes. Just adding garlic and cleaner shrimp will not remove ich from the tank. It only will help the fish fight off an outbreak. The tank needs to be clear of a host ( Fish ) for atleast 30 days.

Don't waste your time (and permanently die the silicone seams in your tank) with Greenex. I know people who have repeatedly used it, it may kill some ich off, but it doesn't kill them all and it won't solve the problem. Lowering the salinity isn't going to do much either, unless you got all the way to 1.009 and do hypo.

No greenx, please.
Hyposalinity is all that is needed to treat ich.

garlic for me ... worked for 3 times i did it maybe its just luck .... i'm gonna keep prayin to god to make it work

That's exactly my point. If you actually killed it then why does it keep coming back? If you do the hypo, clear the tank for 30days and then QT every fish when they come in...then you shouldnt ever have another outbreak. Can I get an Amen?

hey soccer4life the garlic made up for the time before i didnt put new fish in to a qt. that has been one of the many things this board has tought me :) so dont just drill me please

and Ty... if you will read the beginning of this post. The original posting was about people who use Garlic as a sole treament for Ick and tell people that that is the way to handle Ick outbreaks. It sounds like you used it before you knew how to eliminate the problem by usin a QT. You're one of the smart ones. This post was not meant to single you out in any way.

lets see...greenex ? nope dyes all the silicone sealer in tank and does very little for ich,,,,formalin??? nope prety much the same thing without staining,,,kick ich ??its ok i guess,,,hypo?? works!!!quarintine fish???works!!!garlic???doesnt cure anything, just helps fish immune system,,, I have a fish only tank and i maintain a very low level of copper and i use a uv sterilizer also, and i never have to use anything for ich ever again, i learned this the hard way by loosing about 300 $ dollars worth of fish due to a blue hippo with ich,,, i also learned that 99 % of all fish suppliers maintain a small level of copper in their tanks so that they never get ich on their fish either,,, so i figured id do the same and now i never see any problems.....remember FISH ONLY TANKS ! GOOD LUCK

what if you had ich and your fish fought it off and never got it again, would the parasite die off after 30 days still? and could you add more fish without the worry of an ich outbreak?
