There are a number of different species of anthias in that photo as well as a few blue/green chromis. The large majority of anthias species are not extremely hardy and require special care and there are also only a few rare anthias that are suitable for less than 55-75 gallons.

No way would I put more than 1 anthias in a 40. I have 1 male lyretail (one of the hardier species btw)in a 55 and that may be too small.

They are definately anthias. I can see lyretail and threadfin. The purple ones are all purple queen anthias. Very, very hard to keep alive ( definately expert level ) They are mid level-school swimmers. You can mix deifferent types of anthias and they will school together. two to three should be max in a 40 gallon. Don't get the purple queens unless you like putting cash in a paper shredder.

I forgot to mention that if you want a great school of anthias in a 40 gallon go for the dunbar anthias. They look almost identical to the purple anthias but in the solid pinkish/cranberry color of the bartletts and threadfin anthias. they have a yellow tail and will stay out in the open in the mid range of your tank. They max. in size at 2-2.5". you should be able to find them for about $ 20.00 each. They are an intermidiate level fish to keep.
