my tank has been going a week... not even actually...
my tuffa baserock has some speckles of a turquoise color... not a lot but some small dots here and there... any idea what that is???
another question RE live rock- some of the green life on the live rock seems to have died??? my water checks out great so far... no spikes of anything yet.
i used aragonite sand bottom and about 15lbs of LR... along with 30ish baserock (tuffa)...
hmmm, last question... i have 2 damsels that i am cycling with (i dont like looking at water and rock only)... they seem to always be moving their lips (fish lips), is this normal? like i said the tests on the water are good as of now and the fish are not laboring at all, in fact they seem darn happy in there...
oh ya, another last question.. i have a damsel who has a bright peacock like dot on the rear portion of his back/dorsal fin.. he is pink and purple striped around the head... and grey with flecks of color on his body... clear fins... any idea what kind he is? i cannot seem to find him on this or any other saltwater fish site.

to clarify about the speckles on the tuffa- it was NOT on there when i got the rock... it has grown on it... i figured i'd let you know that before i heard "it might be paint" :)

finally i came up with "coraline".. or some form of it... i did 4 or 5 searches and finally used a good combo of words... hopefully that is what it is... and hopefully it continues to grow cuz it's a sweet looking color.

This is not a flame...But why are you using LF to cycle? Their actions you describe could be that they are beginning to be sick.
They will eventually die from ammonia poisoning.
The green on the rocks is probably dieing off because of cycleing. :D

i am using LIVE FISH to cycle because..... i want to.
why do you put fish that should be swimming in an ocean in a tiny little fish tank??? shouldnt they be out there free to go where they please?

Well said.
Good luck keeping them alive through the cycle.
(Please, don't flame me, I promise I won't do it myself!)

it's not the talbots damsel, thought it has some similarities... i am CERTAIN it is a damsel.... just not sure which.. i just looked at damsel sites on the net and not one had a picture of this thing...
i will hopefully post a picture tonight, depends on if my home comp will work right or not...

Just because aquarium keeping involves keeping wild creatures in captivity doesn't mean we should throw all concern for our animals' welfare out the window. Just a thought.

i dont get the holier than thou attitude that some of you put forth... to each his own.. if i feel like cycling with a fish then so be it... i didnt ask once if it was ok with you all.. and i never will.
i hope each of you who thinks it's wrong to cycle with fish dont eat any sort of meat.... cuz you should see how they treat cows.. they drop them from 40 feet up in a crain regularly... they choke chickens and throw them against the wall... why? because they are there to die for you to eat...if YOU didnt eat that meat then there wouldnt be so much need for slaughter houses.. shame on you!!!!
i will never ask you people if it's ok and humane if i do something.. i just asked a simple question, if you dont like the way i am doing something, close the freakin post.
to the NONjudgemental.... sorry for the rant.

Whoa there, killer. Why don't you dial the hostility down a notch or two and let's discuss things like civil adults? Nobody's trying to say you're evil, cruel, stupid, or any of the other things you apparently read into this thread. It was just pointed out that cycling a tank with live fish is unnecessary and is very hard on the fish. I'm sorry if you don't like hearing it, but that is the overwhelming majority opinion on this board. No need to go off the deep end.

no deep end here... just pointing out a simple hypocritical view. i know with time comes knowledge but 10 plus years ago (when i actually knew what i was doing and worked at a salt water store) everyone ALWAYS recommended damsels to cycle.... i did however cycle with an octopus once... lived for 2 years till the great escape.

I don't see any hypocrisy whatsoever in this thread. Cycling with damsels is unnecessary and hard on the fish. Whether you're a vegan or a hard-core carnivore, it's still a true statement.
