I have these too, and couldn't figure out what the heck they were! I hear tunicates are a sign of a very healthy tank. Congrats to us both! lol

They really aren't a sign or good or bad conditions in a tank. If anything, it can mean your tank is high on the nutrient side.

Two different things. They look pretty similar from afar, I guess, in that they have a similar shape and intake siphon. I can see it's a tunicate because it's clear and smooth. Sponges (pineapple sponges, Q-tip sponges) are not see through, are textured and do not react to touch.
Touch it. If it reacts, it's a tunicate.
