I haven't been around in awhile so am not sure if you posted something on your star. But sandsifter stars quite regularly die(if not usually die), of starvation, about 9-12 months after getting them. They eat all the lovely critters in a sand bed and then slowly starve. After awhile, they start to disintegrate, starting at the tips of the arms. It would not surprise me if the crab started munching then. Anyway, this is a definite possibility when it comes to sandsifter stars...though that doesn't look like the nicest crab either :)

Well my star was doing great then one day a leg was gone. then about 4 days later the other leg was gone... then a week later he was gone

the crab was in a glass in water (only about an inch) for about 9 hours and still was alive...like nothing bothered him at all.... I then threw him outside in my back yard.... haven't seen him since :D
well thanks for the ids....

This distintegration is very consistent with starvation of the star. They give no other signs of trouble until they just start losing large parts of their body and just disappear.
