I purchased about 15 hermit crabs. The only way i could describe them is that they are light brown with furry legs.
What do you call these?
Also, they keep on dying; about one a day. I find them w/o their shells.
Whats going on?
Thanks
PS Excuse my ignorance...I am new to this.

Hard to say without a pic, and it's still hard.:D

3 choises. 1, not acclimated long enough. 2, they are molting. 3, they are killing each other.
Or, could be some thing else with your water, like SG. Can you give more info?

Do you mean 2, they are changing shells? Hermits don't molt.

hermits most definitely molt. that is the only way for them to grow. i think dburr has it covered for the most part. they could also be a temperate species that can't exist in a warm water environment. how large are they?

They are small hermit crabs; I didn't purchase the blue or red hermits b/c I read that they were too aggressive. It seems like these are also aggressive...I don't think that they are molting because there shells are empty.
So nobody knows the name of these hermits?
Thanks
I have a halloween Hermit that is doing awesome....

I was thinking SG, PH, ammonia, nitrite, ect....
When they molt, they leave the shell and hide. I don't think they go right back in the shell or a bigger shell right away. But I could be wrong.:D

sounds like molting - BUT - I would check your PH level and have your water tested for PH and Copper @ a reputible LFS. I know (sadly from experience) if your PH is off then crabs will crawl out of their shells - almost like they are crazy or something!!

Thanks for the info....I thought they were dead but hopefully they were molting...
BTW,
PH 8.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
Salinity 1.024
So I guess that nobody knows what kind of Hermits these are! I guy in my LFS said they were called blue-white hermits...

If you are new to hermits I will let you in on a common practice amoung them, they will kill each other for shells.
Provide them with extra shells. I try to keep 2 extra shells in the water for each hermit. They will molt and exchange up to the next size and so forth.
Otherwize when one molts it will become a target from another to get its shell.
When I collected my last batch of hermits, Gulf of Mexico standard brown banded common sand scuttler variety, I introduced (completely sterilized) pretty shells that I have collected through the years from around the world (Belize, Cuba, US & B Virgins, Hawaii, Johnston Atoll, etc.) at the same time.
Every single hermit, 30-35, exchanged shells within 15mins. And then proceeded to exchange again in a consistant pattern of house hunting, for about a week.
I left the old shells to become fodder and micro havens for pods.
Funny, they prefer my cleaned collected shells over their shells they brought with them from the Gulf.
Anyway, add more shells, with some size variation. Just because they are hermies don't think that they are immune to stress. Give the little guys some choices and they will live longer healthier lives.
