Hey I was at the beach today at Padre Island and ran across these little guys washed up on shore. They are fastened to a piece of drift wood. What are they?

Looks like some bivalve or barnacle. That bright read is weird looking - sometimes in nature, a warning of toxicity?

I've got something similiar to that in my tank i think, are they kinda like two shells with a tongue sticking out?

We have some of those in out tank, too - only without the red. I don't think we could remove them, since I've seen our evasive gorilla crab try before with no success. (Yes, we will get rid of him eventually... we're just brainstorming right now, since we've tried all the tricks we know of!) Anyway, are they bad? There are only a few, and they don't seem to be multiplying...
I'll be following this.. ***) I hope other people respond!

I believe they're gooseneck barnacles. From the 2007 Annual Marine Fish & Reef USA magazine: "Creatures of the Sargassum Forest" by Dr. Robert Goldstein: "Gooseneck barnacles (Lepas) are common in the weed and on drifting debris trapped by the Sargassum. They're spectacular in marine aquaria, but require daily or more frequent feedings with brine shrimp squirted right onto their fanlike feeding gills. A few days without food, and they expire. Suitable for public aquaria, they are at risk in captivity."

At risk being destroy my tank? Or not surviving. Either way they didn't, They were washed on shore and out of water for a while. I had them in there for a few hours then they died.
