Cool:) ... now what? do I just let it ride out? Most of what I've read seems to indicate it'll just go on it's own.

ding ding ding, WHAT DO WE HAVE FOR HIM JOHNNY :)
50 MILLION DOLLARS :)
Sorry. Im a jerk.
Its diatoms/cyano. I would try wiping it off the glass and as far as the rock goes get some critters in that tank to start cleaning. When in doubt always do a water change :) Keep your nitrates and phosphates down as much as possible and water flow up and they shouldn't be a problem. Good luck they can blow up on you.

Snails. Snails. Snails. I just bought some and they cleaned my rocks right up. They are amazing eaters. :) I bought turbos by the way.

Snails definitely. When he says turbos there are lots of different kinds. For general eating get a couple astrea snails. Sometimes called turbos. For larger stringy substantial algae, ie hair algae, get mexican turbo snails. I woudln't buy more than 2 of them for your tank. They can eat themselves to death. Cerith and nassarius snails are good at going into the sand and helping stir it up. I have mini strombus snails in my 12 and 20 that are great at handleing the cyano and diatoms on my glass. Not to mention they reproduce in my tanks. I have babies everywhere. I have heard conches also do a job on cyano and diatoms but im not sure on that one. They are so expensive sometimes i don't bother. A small queen conch around here is 10+ dollars.... Hermits dont hurt either in keeping things clean so the cyano and diatoms don't have a food source....
EDIT: the strombus are not buyable, i may change that one day :) , but look for them at the LFS about 30 minutes before they close. They come out more at night.

Aah! What do you mean by that? I have five right now in my tank! Along with 3 Astrea's.

Just that. Mexican turbos are efficient algae eaters and NEED ALOT of algae to survive. I just attribute that to my early experience and also working in several lfs. I have starved a few of them myself. They will eat the crap out of hair algae. I have a single one in my 20 right now. He seems fine but you won't know they are starving till they die. You can try and place some algae sheets in your tank. They may munch on that. I"m not certain. Back to the LFS. The tanks we used to keep them in were spotless. Not a single hint of algae in the tank. Needless to say half of them were dead or dying as we couldn't move them out of the store fast enough, and were limited for places we could put them with any food. So my gut tells me not to overdo the mexican turbos. The astreas are much more tolerable and can survive on much less. Ceriths and nassarius as well. You could try requesting some hair algae from the lfs too :) Or talk to some of the LFS customers. I can garauntee you half of them have hair algae problems :) Just make sure it doesn't come from a tank with copper in it. I don't think it can survive in a tank like that anyways but, i would make sure regardless.

 Darn it. I had my heart set on buying all Astreas. No wonder my LFs was pushing for the sale of the Mexican Turbos. Once again to all the newbie's such as myself, do all the research that you can and dont always trust your LFS.

:) Well don't jump the gun like that. It is possible they sold them to you knowing that but the mexican turbos are the better snail in general, so maybe it was like that. Whoever sold them to you obviously didn't now how much better they are.

same problem in my tank. added about 100 snails and hermits yesterday. as of this morning, my rocks and tank is almost spotless. i highly recommend the clean up crew, if your tank is ready for them.
