I went looking at Lion Fish and I think you are right that your lion fish is Pterois radiata. Hope maybe Cranberry or Saxman will confirm this for you!!!

I don't want this to be mean, but I hope that is a quarantine tank that those fish are in. Otherwise, I am afraid those fish will not live very long with how it is set up. Even then, there should be something for them to feel comfortable and hide in and around. On top of that, that filtration is far too inadequate for even one fish to survive long term in. There doesn't appear to be any protein skimming, powerheads, and live rock as well. How long has this tank been running?

yes it a quarintine tank so I can upgrade to 50 gallons in 6 months. Can I add a dwarf lionfish with my radiata lionfish?

You can if you had another that was a small size,
But lions need rockwork to perch on. Yours are going to be uncomfortable for that long without perches and caves.

Dont mean to steal thread just one question wat type is mine...He is in a small tank right now as i had to move him from my 125 reef as he was eyeing my royal grama and clown fish that i have had for years he is Temp> in a 14 cube with all rock moved out except for one corner in wich i have a cave for him to hide, i am going out tomorow to get a 55 gal tank for him, which i plan to let mature a month or two once the cycle is over, i got the lionfish with hopes of putting him in the reef tank, but plans changed when he decided to chase the inhabitants, I bought him two days ago, and since being in the 14 cube last night he has already started eating ghost shrimp and silverides. His gills are always moving but it does not look like he is breathing hard, he is up and always swimming the tank, which has mostly swimming room since i took most of the rock out for him. I will be doing water changes on the cube every four day with clean mature water from my 125. The fish is prob only e or four inches big right now if that, he could fit in the palm of my hand, But back to the qestion wat type is he?

Alright, I'm going to interject here and please don't take this as a personal attack:
Why are you guys purchasing these fish before knowing what they are? Lions have a specialized diet and some are harder to get to eat than others, research should be done PRIOR to purchasing. From what I'm reading, a lion, unless it's a Fu Manchu, in a reef with small fish is not a good idea. You were kind of set up for disaster there. I'm also not a fan of purchasing a fish with hopes of upgrading, because yes, they are just hopes until the tank is up and running. Things can happen in a 6 month span that prevent you from having that larger tank. WAIT until you have the larger tank set up before buying fish that need to go in it. Yes, a month or two of quarantine is fine, but 6, that's not really fair to the fish. Would you want to live in an a 2' by 2' closet while your room was being built for 6 months?

How long have you own the fish that are in that tank? I read another one of your threads where you say this tank was started at the beginning of this month. In no way is it ready for these fish. You have a lot more researching to do.
You need live rock in there. You have three fish that are really not suited to be in a tank without any live rock, especially the angelfish. I was always told that angels do not make good tankmates for lions as they have a tendency to nip, so keep an eye on this. Bi Color angels are not the easy to care for and MUST have mature live rock to graze off of or they will not last long.
What is your copperband butterfly eating?
You desperately need more surface agitation in that tank
Is that chunks of uneaten food in the sand behind the lion?

What a shame, and that is my favorite type of lionfish too. (The Radiata)

Oh, and I think that the other is a Russells Lion, but not sure. Yeah you guys really need to do some research before you go out and buy these beautiful fish to give them the best hope for survival. I will, however, say good luck to the both of you on keeping them.

well so far mine is doing really good in the 14, i went out today and bought a reef ready 65 gal tank, I will be getting plumbing supplies this weekend and setting it up with rock from my 125 reef and some sand i already have, i may plumb it into my 125 gals sump tank get the fish in and then slowly add sand and rock over the next few weeks. I HAVE NO PLANS ON KEEPING HIM IN THE 14 FOR LONG, and please note i said he is already eating.

I can't say anything about people's grow out tanks. I like to buy my fish small and often start off in a tank that will not be their end destination. Perfect example... volitans in a 6g.

Yes but you're basically an exception: You are an expert with this fish. You also plan ahead of time and have a tank ready for them. I'm simply saying that you shouldn't plan for what you don't have. Placing that type of lion in a reef with small fish was asking for disaster and causes me to wonder how much research was done ahead of time prior to purchase.
For what it's worth downtime89, I was really just criticizing your plan of attempting to put him in the reef with small fish. Yes, he's small right now, but he'll grow and ultimately you were going to have an issue and the fact that you don't know what type it is. I'm really criticizing MandarinGoby for having a new tank with that many fish in it. Fish that need rocks, etc, Little to no research is being done there.

Oh i understand, i am not worried about critizizm i learn from it, but i was told by a few fish friends he wouldnt mess with anything bigger than his mouth, so i figured he could stay in my reef for a few weeks till his home was ready, i always had plans on getting him a tank to himself with possibly later a eel and large fish that he wont mess with, but i guess my clown looked tasty as well as my royal grama.
