If you have a refuseum, do you need a protein skimmer?

I have a refugium in my system and I also have a protein skimmer in my sump. Do I need the protein skimmer if I have a refugium? I have noticed that the algae isn't doing so good, even though I have a 30 watt light over it for 16 hours a day.

my thought is yes, you absolutely still need a skimmer. the refugium won't do anything about taking the crap out of the water. if Thomas and Bang Guy both respond with the same advice, that's pretty much the only opinion that you need.

I think what he's trying to say is that he has a skimmer in his sump, and he wants to know does he need another one for his fuge.
Correct? :notsure: To answer your question it depends. For example, let's say your skimmer is rated for a 55 gallon tank, and you have a 55 gallon tank, plus, the water in your sump, plus the water in you fuge. Well now, you could be 15, 20, 30 ??? gallons over the capacity of the skimmer and in this case, yes you need another skimmer. But if you have a 55 and your skimmer is rated for a 120, and your sump/fuge are hooked up and/or plumbed together, you do not need one. Do you run the lights in you fuge opposite of your tank lights? If not, you should. It's not a suggestion, it's a necessity. Hope this helps. Write back W/ your info

My skimmer is big enough to handle both the tank and sump. My refugium is in my sump. I thought I read somewhere that having a refugium does away with the need for a skimmer. As far as my lights, I have them both on a timer going on and off at the same time. What is the beneifit of having them operating opposite of one another? What times would you suggest? I have them both coming on at 6 in the morning and turning off at ten at night.

a refugium does not take away the need for a skimmer. a refugium is a good place for pods to grow and reproduce away from the main tank, so they won't be eaten as fast. it's also a good place to grow macroalgae which can benefit by using up the nutrients that are needed for undesirable algae.
a skimmer actually removes bad stuff from the water. as uneaten food desolves, feces and urine floats around, algae, etc etc, it can be left in the water and contaminate the system if not for a skimmer. these bad particles attach themselves to the tiny bubbles in the skimmer and are "skimmed" out of the system via the foam in the skimmer chamber that escapes into the collection cup.
so in these ways, a fuge and a skimmer are very different things. a fuge can be very beneficial, but a skimmer is pretty much a necessity imo.
as far as the lights on the tank and fuge, I've read that the lights on the fuge should be on a reverse cycle from the main tank's lights. what I take this to mean is that the fuge lights should be running when the tank lights are off. Not positive on this though since I don't really have a fuge at the moment.

Thats the way I do it. When lights on main go off the lights on the fuge go on.

In all honesty a skimmer is one of the top pices if not the top piece of equipment to have in an aquarium. If you cant afford a good skimmer and dont mind nosie a seaclone or jebo180 HOB skimmer with mod is okay until upgrade. If you dont use a skimmer for a while I would say hope you have alot of LR and possibly a good refugium bc you are most likely to have a lot of algae-
