I have called every Home Depot in Kentucky and none of them sell southdown. They only have play sand by Quickcrete (sp). A guy told me that this sand is not the right size to serve the purpose is he right? Has anyone used this stuff before.....will it work? I really really need help with this!

Im actually TexasReefRat on the roomates comp.
QuickCrete has silicates in high numbers, avoid it as it will promote algae!

Well what should i use???? Also let me make sure i have this right even if im just sitting up my tank the poor water quality will not damage the lr i put in it. By lr i mean cured lr not the uncured. Does the ammonia and the rest not hurt the bacteria on the lr and ls?

superdust......welcome to the confusing world of "where do I find southdown"
Some folks are able to find it and use it with less expense and great success.........others need to look into alternatives....
Personally I used a combination of Natures ocean LS..caribsea aragonite...and caribsea aragamax...costs more to use these products....but here in New Mexico southdown is not a option...caribsea and natures ocean have done well in my system.......as for using the quickcrete.....I have used approximately 40 lbs as an experiment in a 29 gal system I have......absolutely no problems with algae now for 4-5 months...but the color and partical size are different.....time will tell if it works or not......but personally I'd be extremely hesitant to use this stuff to establish a DSB in a reef.......

I have regular playsand in my FO tank and have no problems with it. There are a few on the board who use the quickcrete. It is a quartz based sand. Contrary to popular belief, silicate sand doesn't cause algae, water problems do. There are many articles on this subject. Try a search engine and you will find them.

Im using some Bonsal play sand in my FO tank. It looks to be quartz based. Ive had no problems with it so far. It clouded up a lot at first but after a few days it was ok. I look about like any other sand ive seen.

I am using Playsand from HD. I have a DBS and I'm having no problems with the sand. I too was unable to get south down in North Flordia. They said it would cost to much to ship in a couple of bags, Cost them more to have some routed over here then it actualy cost for the product. If you really need some south down I can tell you someone that can ship you as mush as you what. But it ain't cheap. For me just shipping alone was $17 a bag, and I live on the east coast. The sand per bag is $10.
