Hi I'm new here and have been doing way to much research and cant come up with good answers so here I go. I am thinking of starting a saltwater tank 75-125 gallons I was wondering what would be the best filtration system most ppl I talk to around here say that a canister filter is decent to start out with I was wondering well what type of canister filter like fluval or H.O.T. magnum or something else and would I need more than one or just forget the whole canister set up and go for wet/dry or something else(im looking to set up fish only with some live rock) and next would be what would be the best substrate live sand or crushed coral haven picked out fish yet cause im more worried about everything else I feel if you dont have the right set up nothing else will matter.

canisters are not the best filtration... the best is natural, or biological. a canister filter will work, but does not do best for salt water.. your best bet is a refugium! If you are looking to get into FOWLR, or fish only with live rock, then a sump would do fine.. i had a canister filter and removed it.. spits out micro bubbles into my tank.. dont mean yours does or will, but i heard micro bubbles are bad .. A sump will also allow for better oxygen exchange and a fuge, or refugium, will house many beneficial bacteria and algae.. Algae helps to removes nitrates the natural way. Alot of people go with the sump/fuge together. but from what i have been told, if you are looking to setup a reef tank, u will need only a fuge.. sump/fuge also gives u a place to put your heater and skimmer so there is less hanging on the tank if yours is not drilled.. hope this helps you make your decision.. i wouldnt buy a canister for the tank, but if u already have it, might as well use it, but watch for micro bubbles.
you can put your heater and skimmer in the sump and have live sand and rock in your fuge.. This will help the natural biological filtration system and will be very beneficial to your tank, as well as add water volume.. I personally would go for the 125 gallon with a 30 gallon sump/fuge. they arent hard to setup... there are lots of threads about em if you are interested in looking into them. They are sold already assembled, or check the DIY (do it yourself) for plans on making one..
crushed coral tends to increase nitrates and you will eventually switch over to live sand, so id say go with the live sand.. and do not cycle with fish, everyone always regrets it.. may the brave soldiers rest in peace!

Ok I haven bought anything yet so a canister may not be the best I just looked up refugium how good is this one ???

also if i do go with that how exactly would i set it up as meaning what do I have to put in it like algae or anything like that any help is greatly appreciated or any other ideas and im pretty sure im going with live sand I think that is the only decision I have made so far.

Cain, I agree, but with a 125 I would use at least 55 sump/fuge.

Good water flow, added water volume, killer skimmer and sump/refuge.

dead Cocktail shrimp for cycle.

Search sump/fuge!

My thoughts of filtration...
Large (adaquate) quantity of Live Rock and SSB for Biological filtration (suface area for Bacteria)...High Flow , distributed through out the tank to keep deitrus suspended and removed from MT,promote gaseous exchange and maintain oxygen levels...a Large sump and LARGER Fuge with Macros for malnutrient removal through export (denitrification) and a Killer Skimmer to remove Mass quantities of DOCs (organics) prior to decomposition...
With a well balanced system, no other "filtration devices" (bioballs/biomedia) are necessary...Other than the ability to run Chemical Media (carbon or phosphate removers) from time to time, best done in a Fluidized bed (or converted canister) type system...

One of these days I'll memorize that!

I have a 40 gallon tank just sitting around would that work and be sufficent enough and my next question is do i still put a filter in I cant quite seem to make out what is in this one i found on the boreds ( https://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/show...ht=sump%2Ffuge )it may be a protein skimmer I understand the concept just no one seems to say what exactly is in the setup like what they have or they use lingo which I have no idea what it really means so if anyone has some simple set ups and what they consist of would be greatly appreciated until then its back to doing more research.
:help:

IDK how to post a link to a thread but if you go to the top of this page and do a search for pics of sumps it is I think the third thread titled will this sump modification work? by adam

If I could suggest, you might pick up the book "Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Fenner. Great book, and it will take you through everything you need to know when setting up your aquarium. The only thing is that he talks about some older technology (undergravel filters) that most of us avoid these days. But he also covers most of the latest stuff. Great overview.

Since I got the whole concept yet I was thinging about starting a small ten gallon tank for right now and would it be ok to make like a 2.5 or 5.5 gallon refugium and would this be possible at all just a thought since im thinking i might go small before going big.
