Well, as many of you know, the northeast is pretty much without power. It sucks to have a reef tank right now, especially when temps in Detroit have soared over 90 the past few days. All looks well in the tank, but who knows how long that will last. First water temp this morning was 76, where as last night it was 78. It will probably go over 80 by the end of the day. I stir my tank with a giant spatula as often as I can remember, and I have recruited my girlfriend into the job as well. I also blow through an airline to an airstone to try and keep the water oxygenated.
Well, just thought that I would check in with you guys and let you know how things are going. It'll be a day or two before I can get back on here, but I'll keep you posted as soon as anything changes.
Pray for my little undersea world . . . . its goona need it:(

Some one will correct me if I'm wrong, but air from your lungs carries more carbon dioxide than oxygen. It may not be that great of an idea. Picking water up in a ptcher and pouring it back in would probably be better.
Well, anyway, hope you get power back soon.

I don't get it. Everyone keeps posting FROM New York and the Northeast about how they have no power, but yet people are using computers and the Internet.
How is everyone doing this?
Oh...and I believe your lungs only use I think 10% (or some small percentage) of the O2 taken in by breathing, so when you exhale, your breath still has a high O2 content. Thus why mouth to mouth still works in resuscitation.

for the record, we do not expire more carbon dioxide than oxygen. Yes the CO2 levels are increased, however, we are only able to process @ <10% of the oxygen in our lung capacity. So, there will still be significant oxygen going into the water along with CO2 and N. Hope this helps.

what i did was took teh battery backup form my comp and hooked up my air pumps to it, i didnt think this blakc out would last, and i got my power back up about 8:30 last night

Hey just an idea. For those of you wishing to oxygenate your tank why not go to walmart and buy one of those self contained aerators (sp?) for portable live wells in the fishing section. They would be cheap insurance to anyone. And if you want to get something even better they have the ones that are basically a little bilge pump with a venturi on it that you hook to a boat battery. I think you can get them for 30 or less and a cheapo battery and autozone or battery warehouse should be like 20 bucks.

well . . . an update . . . . power is restored ( I posted from work this morning. I work at U of M hospital which was running on auxillary) Anyway, ALL IS ALIVE AND WELL!!!!!! No ammonia spike, no ill effects!! My stirring and airstone worked like a charm.
And on the airstone thing, well . . . . it is possible to blow out your mouth without inhaling . . . . . . just ask Bill;) :p

Hey Justin,
If you would have already moved by now. You could have hooked up to my room mates generator, along with all our neigbors! Had to run to brighton to pick it up yesterday. Did you go down nine mile on your way home? See the spiffy FERRARI sitting off the road out of gas, ouch... that had to hurt leaving it just sitting there. I almost ran out of gas in Farmington Hills, and was freaked about leaving my R1 in some parking lot.
