I'm melting....

but luckily my fish seem to be cool. Last night our air conditioner stopped working. The tanks only got up to about 84 and my poor chiller on my seahorse tank has been running non stop. I just hope it doesn't blow out. Today, my loving husband stayed home all day putting bags of ice in my 2 tanks in the kitchen to keep them around 80. I'm so lucky he was willing to help even though he's not that into the tanks. Our house got up to 99 before the AC repair man got here this afternoon. Thank goodness it was an easy fix and he had the part. Now we are just waiting for the house to cool back down. As of this minute it's 88 and feels so much better.
Other than chillers and icebags are there any other options when this happens? I have a generator for power outages, heaters for the winter, ect I just never dreamed of the air going out in one of the hottest midwest summer. It was 106 today.

Lol. Yet Another reason why im studying hvac at college. Lol.
Ive always had a couple of 2 liter bottles frozen at all times for those kinds of emergencies. Have two more sitting out unthawed so you can switch them out in your freezer as needed.
Another idea is to turn all of your lights off on the tanks and unplug any unnecessary powerheads and heaters and other pieces of equipment. Keep the return pump going and maybe one powerhead. Thats sufficient for short term.
Maybe you should try a redneck airconditioner next time. Take one of those insulated coolers that dorsnt leak and put some ice and really old water in it along with a small pump. Connect the pump to a piece of vinyl hose. The vinyl hose is then attached to a coil of copper tubing that is around a fan. Then drains back down into the cooler. Turn the pump and fan on and you have cool air. :) ive had to do that a couple of times myself.

Rick, you might want to rethink that statement. Ice from the freezer is from the tap. You dont want to put tap water in the tank and you dont want to make your salinity vary.

Small window units are pretty cheap now, it will at least keep one room breathable. I can't take the heat at all, but my mother can't even stand the slightest breeze. I have central air but she won't let me put it on until it hits in the 90s....I keep a window unit in my bedroom for sanctuary...LOL and chillers on the fish tanks.
I'm glad you and your husband are okay, that kind of heat is deadly to people, not just fish tanks.

We did go out and get a small window unit for the bedroom, but the rest of my house is open, and of course the tanks are not in the bedroom. I sold my smaller chiller and bought a bigger one for the sea horse tank and yesterday I was wishing I still had it. Oh well. The house is 74 this morning. Thank goodness!
