No I only change out the carbon once a month...and it's always washed off before putting into the filter's....I have always had large freshwater tanks(55 or larger). Just new to this whole saltwater thing..I'm starting to think you need a PhD to do this.

nah not at all its a bit more on chemistry than FW tanks though. but the carbon really only has a place in the SW tank a couple days a week or so. it can really reak havok on the tank if left to long. thats not whats going on with your tank though. I only add a carbon pad to the tank when the water starts to look abit yellowish to polish the water up clear again.

So you dont run carbon filters...I have 2 Emperor 400 for my 100g and rena for the 20g...What are good filters for the 2 tanks I have if carbon shouldnt be used..

once the tank is setup the rock and sand with good water flow are your natural filters. I still have a hang on filter on my tank but its empty till I want to run carbon.
how much rock and sand do you have in the tank? and what do you have for water movement?

we have 40 pounds of LR and about a 3/4 inch sand bed..the filter we run on the 20g is a rena 55 which can run a 55g tank
