I used to use Instant Ocean, but the calcium wasnt where I wanted it, had trouble getting the coraline to grow. I just switched to Tropic Marin, so we'll see.
I dont think IO was a bad salt, maybe something else was up, idk.

I switch from previous salt to Instant Ocean and have had probs with diatom and green algea sense using it. I am very upset as it is much more exspensive then what i was using.

Whats a good salt mix then? Anyone else had this problem with red sea?
Well personally I like Oceanic Natural Sea Salt. I do on occasion though switch it up so I can experience other salts as well. Ironically at this time I'm using some Instant Ocean, no problems for me though, calcium is lower than Oceanic however.

I have been using instant ocean reef crystals, and it does keep the calcium pretty low. I does a calcium buffer though, so that is the only problem i have with that salt.
I would say, stop doing water changes, and see if you still get the diatoms, they may just be going on by themselves, and you think its because of the water changes?

I do not do W/C I add some pre-mixed water/s1at in a trash can and top off when needed with that and a1so use water from my typhoonIII.
My 1fs guy was at my house and said they are some of the nicest tan4s he has seen and did nothing... He drove 2 hours to do some wor4 chec4 it a out and ended up going swimming instead and did not charge me a dime.
Fenner to1d me when we were in saint 1ouis a few months bac4 the best tan4 is the one you do nothing with....

hahaha, its so cute when they do it, but quickly gets annoying! My wife was googling something, one of our little cockatiels hit the "X" button 3 times before she hit enter and brought up TONS of nasty sights!!
I was laughing so hard at her, and the bird is known as the p0r^ addict now

We do a 50/50 of IO and Oceanic and that seems to work very well. I do have a 200g bucket of Tropic Marin and not sure if that one will be opened and tried.

How are you toppin off with salt water and no raising youre salinity sky high? I was under the impression that you top off with fresh water b/c the water has evaporated but not the salt so in the afternoon your SG is higher b/c of evaporation. If you top off with salt water youre adding salt everytime OOORRRRR i totaly missed what you were saying

Ok, so their is salt creep on fixture the edge of the tank overflow cords hanging splash from the overflow to the sock etc which essentially dries and is no longer in yoour water. I mix up some in a trash equal to what is in the tank and or a little lower and add it. It is not like i ADD 20 gallons it is 3 to 5 here and there to keep the sal sg the same. I also use regular water form my typhoo III to refill the sumps

When my tank was younger, I would have this same thing happen; not the green algae, but just the diatom outbreaks. I would do 10 gallon water changes every 1-2 weeks on a 55 gallon tank. Eventually, the diatom outbreaks stopped. I never really figured out what it was. I used RO/DI water with a TDS meter reading of 000. I wondered whether there was silica in the substrate (supposed to be 100% aragonite sand) and that the water changes were providing some other element the diatoms needed.
As I said, it eventually went away as the tank matured.

You're only gonna get diatoms when phosphates/silicates are in the tank. This is their 'food source' and cannot grow without their presence. You filled your tank with tap water correct? Diatoms are gonna hang around until they consume up all the silicates in the water. WC's using RO/DI water will dilute the amount of silicates remaining. Also using a Phosphate remover such as "Phosphate Sponge" will extract the silicates out of the water quicker than just riding it out. Either way its only a matter of time and they'll be gone, given that you aren't adding anymore silicates unintentionally.
