Do you leave your tank lights on at all times, or turn them off during the night?

Go to your local hardware store. They sell cheap timers that you can plug your lights into.
Not a dumb question at all. Many folks have made the mistake of not thinking about that. It's one of those "why didn't the pet store tell me that" kind of things.

MH's ~ 6 hours a day
Actinic VHO's ~ 2 hours a day
PC's (sump) ~ 16 hours a day
Total light cycle ~ 24 hours a day
IMO...

9am - actinics on (dawn)
10am - MH (daylight) on
7pm - MH off
830pm - actinics off (dusk)
my moonlights always stay on. I use computer fans with LEDs built in to my canopy.. Nice moonlight effect.
Run sump lighting opposite times of daylight lighting. This will balance pH fluctuations.
