What "look" is it that you want?
Go for functional instead. Make a nice big cave and some large over hangs. Make the base to go forward and the next line to stagger back a bit. Don’t just pile the rock in…have a plan on what you want.
By making things functional and interesting for the fish to go in and out of…you will be surprised how nice it looks in the end.
Time also is your friend as coralline algae forms and colors things up a bit. To make my cave…I wanted a really big one. I used a large piece of ceramic coral, it seeds just like base rock over time and looks very natural.
Some people use PVC pipe to help shape things up, but its ugly IMO.

Fiberglass driveway markers or acrylic rod and drill bit and a big piece of cardboard and do a mock up as you setup your rock.

i really like caves too but my problem is all my rocks are huge. i have like 10 very large pieces and a few medium sized ones. its the shape of the rocks that are bothering me.

and they started to smell, thats not good right?

I have busted many rocks to get the shapes that I want. I used a screwdriver and hammer. The smell could be bacteria dieing off.

I agree that rockscaping can be a PIA, but it can be fun too, if approached with the right attitude

You can always re-scape! You will have to eventually.
My favorite rock formation in a simple sketch. It really depends on what type of rock you have, but this is the basic idea.
1. Base of formation
2. Second level
3. Top
Creates a big cave with 4 large entrances, and many small. Close 2-3 entrances with rubble/smaller rock. Try to make the main entrance easily viewable from the front of your tank. Hope this helps!
**View is from the TOP of your tank, looking down.
