In Wall Fish Tank Build Thread

I guess I was kinda vague when I asked about 1/4" line......I was curious if that is what your going to use for your feed line to pump water to the tank.....Curious as to what pump you were considering for that job....

Ah, I see. I was actually planning on converting from 3/4" to 1/4"... although that makes me wonder if that'll just blow the hose right off with that much water and pressure going through. So I'm guessing 1/4" doesn't seem to be feasible?

What pump are you using.....I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but if your going to try it right off the pump I'd probably so no way.....Now if your talking about making your pipe run in 3/4" PVC and then just as it comes out of the wall into the tank it might be possible, but even then I would think about running 3/4" and at some point stepping down to 1/2" and then.....But my real question is where are you going to find 1/4" PVC fittings....From my browsing the big box stores that doesn't seem to be a very common size......
The quick connect fittings I would be a bit leary running off a pump.....That's just me though.....
I found this place online, but doubt you'll find unless you go to a specialty place........http://www.pvcfittingsonline.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1%2F4%22+pvc+fittings&size_in_inches=39

I had a pump I was using on my 150 gallon as the return pump from the sump so I figured for the time being I would use that (at the moment I don't recall which pump it was). I see what you're talking about and that does seem like it may be a bit of a problem. For some reason I was under the impression that some pumps had the 1" output as well as a 1/4" output that you would just push the tube onto, similar to what I have on my RODI kit... the faucet adapter screws onto the faucet and then there is a small pipe that allows for a 1/4" tube to run off it. That is currently what I have running from the faucet upstairs to the RODI downstairs.

Ok, so I'm thinking about this and I might just let it be for the time being. As I mentioned my main goal is to have my 150 Gallon set up in the basement in the wall. This 60 gallon was mostly and after thought. So thank you again Shawn for bringing the issue to my attention. I'm going to manually lug the water up and down the stairs for this 60 gallon tank (until I can think of something that will work). But leaving everything in the basement is the way I have to go as I will be automating the 150 gallon using the standard outputs on the pump.
So close... yet sooooo far.

I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but seems like an awful strain on the pump pumping that distance and being restricted.....Try adapting it down and seeing what you get from it......

So I just carried water from the basement to the office. I'm currently mixing salt and should be ready for rock/sand. Once question though... I recall some saying they wanted to buy live rock and that it wasn't necessary to buy live sand since the rock would add the necessary bacteria and critters to it. Is that really the case? If so it'll be a nice cost saver for this tank. Once this is complete I will be adding a rail to mount my Vega. This tank will be only for Coral for the time being... picture to be coming soon! :)

Technically neither the LR or LS has to be used.....You could use dry rock and dry sand if you prefer.....All comes down to your preference.....

Thanks for that info Shawn. I'm still debating which route I want to take. I'm leaning more towards getting everything dead and building it up from there. It just seems like I won't have the aptasia introduced into the tank if I get a bad live rock or some unwanted worms.
I'll let everyone know what I decide once I come to my decision.
On another note --- I ran to Home Depot today and picked up a couple of eyehooks and picture frame wire that holds up to 50lbs. I drilled a hole into my ceiling, put an anchor in, and placed a hook in the anchor.
Ladies and Gentlemen........ I give you AI Vega!

Let me tell you... that shimmer is amazing. I'm a huuuuge fan of the LED's versus the T5HO's that I have on my 150 gallon. Since I created the hanging kit on my own for a fraction of the price ($5 versus the $40 AI is selling for) I'm keeping egg crate over the water so should the light fall it'll just fall about two inches to be met by the crate... versus a bath.
Hooray! :)

Also, as I was starting to get the tank ready I had a thought about what I'm using this tank for. So as I mentioned I want to keep this tank as my frag tank. However, I don't have a sump or refugium under the tank... just a HOB Filter. Does anyone seeing that posing any kind of problems?

Hey everyone. So I have my frag tank filled up just over half way with water. Now I want to get some sand and rock. I've decided I'm going to buy Fiji Premium live rock and just normal sand (dead I guess... not live). Does anyone have any recommendations as to which sand I should buy? I'm looking for white/off white type sand that is very fine. Similar to something that I see many people have on their fourm... it looks clean and sharp.
