inches per gallon?

It doesn't really work with saltwater. The needs of a 3" tang are different than a 3" goby. You have to consider aggression, diet, and activity level of the fish, as well as the quality of your filtration.

Basically what they are saying is that, each tank will be different, an 8 inch Engineer Goby wont release the bioload that a equally sized Tang. Having damsels will decrease the amount of fish as they are aggressive. Amount of LR and LS water flow, etc. all play a part.

i found this chart w/ tank dimensions, gallons, max # of fish w/ surface area. it is a pretty good chart. is this accurate for saltwater or do these numbers pertain to freshwater?
http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/tanks-us.htm
thats not even that good for freshwater, basicly the chart only shows in theory how many inches of fish you could keep if ONLY oxygen exchange was the worry, since there are many other factors like, fish territoriality, fish diet, actual mass of fish. this chart treats fish like they are one dimensional.....
tyhats one of those rules of thumb that should be beaten to death with a stick no wider than my thumb...

so what's the rule for salt?
the rule for salt is to thouroughly research each individual fishes needs, habits, diet, and compatability. then compare that information to your tank size filtration, and level of expirience in keeping salt water.
