My answer would be that maybe this indirectly this may be a rich man's hobby. Not because of the cost of the equipment, but because generally to successfully keep a saltwater aquarium you need to read and do research moreso than with freshwater. People like us who have committed to this intellectually intense hobby I would say generally are more educated and therefore more likely to make more. By the way I am just 24 and make substantially less than 200k a year. Maybe this can be considered an "eduacted man's hobby". If I were rich enough I would buy a South Pacific island and get out of the hobby. Anyway before I overthink this more I am out ;)

Hhhmmmmm...well I would have voted but I'm not a rich man or a poor man. I'm a woman. Ladies, should we start our own poll? I'm sure a lot of us are more educated and out-earning the men. ;)

I'm reefing on a budget here!
I don't really mind either.....by the time I have the money to get something I want, I appreciate it more than (I think) I would if I could just run out and get whatever I wanted, when I wanted it.

Some things are worth it to me .. other things are not.
I think they call it value.
For two people going to a movie, popcorn and a soda, and dropping $35.00 bucks at the movie theater is not a value to me. It's a rip off.
Buing a healthy $35.00 coral on the other hand ;)
Although I agree that this hobby can suck up some of your cashflow, it's still all relevant.
I rationalize my expense on this hobby as I'm sure we all do.

family of 2, mid 60's, and finding it is literally as expensive as you want to make it, i ahve seen others build systems using ugf's and cc for under 100$ and keep damsels in there, no t my first choice, and i have spent an easy 2k(so far), but do not plan on spending it all at once, so it fits my budget, and i know others that have spent much more, some even on one fish, so it is literally as yo uwant it to be, kind of like a car, whatever you want to afford, you will(within realism)
well put brooomer, i would rather spend 50 bucks on a fish than on a movie too(i can rent it later for 3$ and eat much more of what i want)

I had to work about 30-35 hrs overtime to start my 29 gallon reef + the new diamond studs for my wife(bribe money). Every night when I drag myself home and watch gaze into my tank, it gives me an unmeasurable amount of pleasure and satisfaction. We're definitely not rich and may be strugling at times but it sure does make life more enjoyable to add beauty to our home. Now if you'll excuse me I have to work some more overtime to pay for my new digital camara and savings for another tank. :D

Broomer - thats why you go to the cheap movies. Here in town we have a place that has slightly older movies and it cost $1.99 or something like that, plus all candy, popcorn, soda and everythign else is less than $1.99 i think. Oh by the way they sell beer there also, and you sit at tables. Cool place.
Anyway - I have $40,000+ in school loans to pay back, and right now i work at a job on a grant so it could go anytime. The problem is that i don't have health insurance but i still buy stuff for my tanks???? Whats wrong with me!! Oh and i'm in the lowest pay range in this poll

i'm poor going to school and working in a factory. have a child on the way and i can only buy a little at a time but it is still my favorite thing to do with my money.

Real Estate is tricky guys, one year you can make half a million dollars, don't forget that the gov takes half of it, and then the next year you can make 5,000 dollars, thats what happened to me, but the past few years have been good to me, thats why I got the 240, but even making good money it is still so expensive. I got the tank for free, a rich client of mine was redoing his office so he gave me a 240, custom is something like 96x20x30. I have already spent 2000 just to get all the filters lights, etc. Justin

Hi all,
Well I earn in the mid 70K region, but yet I still have a 29 gallon tank. As mentioned this is only as expensive as you make it... to a certain point.
I just enjoy my little tank and make it as nice and full of life as I can. You don't have to have a X thousand gallon tank to have it pleasing... just make whatever you got the best you can and the best for the animals you keep :)
